Alright, I've had a '98 Land Rover Discover for a while now. It was involved in a Hit and run back in January, and was in the shop for quite some time. I got it back less than a month ago. Anyway, last week, I noticed I had a leak in my radiator. I kept refilling it and driving while the new hose was ordered. Then, on Thursday, I was driving and my oil warning light came on. (this hadn't happened before) Within 60 seconds, the engine shut down, and the temperature gauge started rapidly rising. I pulled over and the engine automatically shut off. Smoke was billowing from the entire engine. I had it towed to a shop. Yesterday, they called and said I had either blown a gasket or the engine was shot. I was amazed. The engine had gone from running perfectly to being shot? All in less than a minute from when I received a warning?!? Anyway, if anyone has any advice, it'd be appreciated. Specifically about cheap rebuilds, or good places to sell a car for parts. Any thoughts?
Did you take it to the dealer or to Rover Shoppe? The former is more apt to lie than the latter, in my personal experience. I used to own a Disco and now own another Rover - Vic at Rover Shoppe never steered me wrong.
Just had my oil changed. The mechanic said there was a problem with where they placed the thermostat in my car on these models that doesn't allow it to read the temperature correctly if there is a leak, which is the craziest thing I've ever heard. Apparently, the engine cooked the oil.
I could be wrong about this, but the oil light comes on when there isn't enough oil pressure. So its totally believable that the oil light could come on and then your car stops running. Especially if your car was running hot because of radiator troubles. If they haven't already - Have them check the oil plug and filter... If either one of those caused the oil pressure loss, then the shop you had the oil change done at needs to be notified - they need to buy you a new engine.
You sure your car wasn't leaking oil? Sometimes after changing your oil they may forget to tighten the bolt and the oil can leak out.
Sounds like your radiator ran dry and cooked the oil.... maybe cracked the block. Hope not for $$$ sake.
My radiator was acting the same way, I put something in it to temporarily stop it from leaking, but today that crap wouldnt even hold water for 10 minutes. (had to stop every 10 minutes and fill the radiator with water so that it wouldnt overheat)
Is the new problem not associated with hit and run? Why couldn't you go back to your insurance and have them foot the bill...Am I missing something?
