As inspired by Drew's tales of corporate asshattery, and Falcon's search for work from home info, as well as my search for a change of scenery :) , I thought this might help.

A thread for general job information; whether a position you know of has come available for others; or job seekers could post what they are looking for. Just whatever is useful.

I see it on other forums and I thought the BBSers could help each other out with this. Something a little more direct than Monster, Careerbuilder, etc.

I'll start with my info in the next post, but hopefully this thread will help some people out in general.

    Or not. Y'know, whatever.

As for me, I'm still stuck in sales/retail and am looking for something else. Even something pretty basic and (obviously) entry level, but a little more professional than the average retail/maintenance type job.

I actually have a BA in communications/media production which I know doesn't help much around here, but it is what it is. I also have computer experience; previous work as a tech but that is also pretty entry level and I am currently working on getting the basic certifications I need.

I have an English minor, and have worked as a sportswriter for a county newspaper in the past. This was for a couple of years and I was on staff, not just a stringer/freelancer.

To be honest, while I'm looking for something long term (supposed to get married this summer, scary though), like Drew I feel I could be happy in something small and work my way up. Just an entry level office job sounds like heaven at this point. :)

Of course, if the position was right, I'd still stay in sales but that really depends.

In any case, any information anyone has would be great and much appreciated.

Rokkit: If you don't mind Uncle Sam, try here: http://www.usajobs.gov/

Do the Basic Search under "Information, Arts, and Public Affairs."

If anyone is interested in becoming a wildland firefighter... usually good for summer jobs during college if you want to work hard, make good money, and see beautiful country ... I can point you to a few places.

Frys has some pretty cute chicks working there.

I think they have cuter chicks than Best Buy.

I need a part-time job. Anywhere. It's really hard to get on, I've applied at several places and haven't been called back for a single one. And I have food service, retail, customer service, and receptionist skills from past jobs. Just seems like everyone's "just accepting applications now" and not actually hiring.

Seriously, all types (I'm in Waco). Petsmart, Old Navy, various other clothing stores, sports retail stores, everywhere at the mall...and I KNOW i HAVE to be one of the more qualified applicants. Just not working out though. I might have to settle for fast food, even though I absolutely loathe it. :(

(Dang...I'm on a roll. Two posts in one day)

Anybody out there with serious PowerPoint skills with a side of Excel, Photoshop & web design?

Not making any promises yet (I just now saw/responding to this thread) so I need to talk to some folks first, BUT it's a "work from home" gig. Actually, work from anywhere with high bandwidth.

Although Photoshop/Web Design might attract your attention, PowerPoint & Excel is an absolute must...with a background in marketing research (but not neccessary at all).

This is what I do and I'm getting to old for all these hours (also, I want to venture into photography one day so having someone capable of taking my place is a good thing): I work for a Marketing Research company creating presentation (powerpoint) using our own creative backgrounds (photoshop) from massive spreadsheets (excel). There is a lot of (time) pressure since we're at the mercy of our client's desires. In designing the presentation I sometimes have to take pictures of products or whatever we need and incorporate them. So having a good camera is a good thing. In the same vain, having a scanner would be helpful too (lots of logos).

A little history: I was the boss' first employee six years ago. We're now at about 15 with a HUGE client base. HUGE. Only two of us work from home on a permanent basis, boss and me. Others work from an office in LA where we have all of our testing facilities.

If you're interested, drop me a line here.

    RR

I better add: If all you have is serious Powerpoint skills, that'll do...seriously! That's probably the most important thing. I'm also opening this to all significant others of this fab BBS too. (Might start out as part-time..."who knows" as Hendrix would sing)

Sorry to hear that. Maybe a sit down restaurant instead of fast food? The pay will be better with the tip. Good luck.

Things must be really tough in Waco right now. Of all things out there, general retail is usually pretty easy to find. Sorry to hear that.

This sounds real interesting, though with all the stuff I worked with in school...powerpoint kinda fell by the wayside. :) Certainly I'm not at the 'serious skills' level.

    7.25 an hour. :D

Seriously though, my boss pays way better than average, but it most depends on your level of expertise and how we "FEEL" about someone in a face to face, casual, nutural environment. Of course it depends on where you live too (the cost of living thingy)...lots of things to consider. One thing I can tell you this is NOT an hourly gig.

Hours are yours as long as we get your best effort. Having said that, we work for the analysts who are on the west coast and the "boss" on the east coast. They tend to keep the 8-5+ hours. So that means if you're living in Houston, you need to be ready between 7a to 7p. Sometimes, like right now, I'm working a lot of hours (to include weekends). Other times, I'm sitting around organizing my files... :)

Yeah Rokkit, serious powerpoint skills is a must.

Too bad your not in Houston. I could get you a job easily. Whether you like the job or not is a personal preference.

Dish Network has a technical call center in Alvin that opened in August. They are definitly still hiring. Starting pay is 9.00/hr or 10/hr if bilingual. Does offer holiday pay and guarenteed 40 hours. Shifts range from 8-430 to 430-1am.
