Freaking jackass homebuilder that offers me more money to leave a competitior fires me after 2 1/2 months. WTF is that? I played by the rules and all that, but this company operates in some kind of secret society in which everyone loves everyone and you can treat someone like complete **** until they are initiatied. Its like an evil fraternity of tattle-tales and a-holes. I suppose its a blessing in desguise because I hated everyone that I worked with, but now Im screwed because the other company I should have freaking stayed with is in a hiring freeze because the housing market sucks right now.

I hate corporate america, and I hate being unemployed. I get to hear constant nagging from my family, girlfriend, etc. on how I should do this or that. I dont want a job in sales - I hate sales with a passion.

Truly I think I would be happy loading baggage at an airport, or driving a bus for blind kids.

Does anyone share my sentiments? Can anyone offer any advice on careers/life? I could use a pick-me-up.

^Were you trying to be funny or did you not read his entire post?

I actually love working for Corporate America. My only interest in this world is aviation and I love working for SWA. I don't know how they do it, but it's the best place to work. And they haven't fired anybody in over 40 years

    Great Benefits
    Nice pay
    Free airline tickets
    Casual dress
3 PM happy hour on the roof
No day is ever a drag

Unfortunately, acceptance rate is less than 1%...

Corporate America truly does suck. I agree.

I have worked for non-profits & public sector since 1993. The pay is lower, and the opportunities for advancement are fewer, but for me the job security makes up for it.

I've been laid off and fired before. It's a crappy feeling. I like working for places where if they want to get rid of you they have to jump through a bunch of hoops. At least that way you know it is coming and you can make arrangements if necessary.

Besides, what I do during the day enables me to do what I really love at night, so you've got to give a little to get a little.

If my dayjob was the only thing in my life and dictated everything about my life, I would be depressed beyond belief.

Sorry Drewdog but if you want to take charge come up with a service people need and start your own buisness. That's what is still great about america you can give the f u to someone and still go out and succeed.

Sorry to hear that dude. :(

I have been thinking about a career change myself. I am tired of the job I have even though it pays decently. I want to get into selling insurance but I am afraid of a job that is based mainly on commission as well as possibly taking a paycut from what I am making now. I probably will wind up staying at my job as the place I work for hardly ever fires anybody (they just make you feel miserable to the point of where you want to quit, lol) - which is a good thing because if I lost my job, I would be so screwed.

Yes, lose your job sure sucks. That's why I think I will stick with the Univeristy, they do not usually layoff or fire people. Good luck on finding a new job, who knows, this might be a blessing in disguise.

    Drewdog,

Sorry to hear about the job.

We're hiring for a position in my department. Pay sucks, but it's an easy gig while you look for something else. Shoot me an e-mail with your resume if you're interested.

I hear you on that one, man. The ****ty thing is, when you're looking for a job, 95% of the jobs you see available are sales jobs. A lot of them are even disguised as other types of jobs as if they know you won't apply if you knew it was really sales.

Sorry to hear about your job. There were layoffs GALORE at my company last year. Many of my friends are no longer here and about 80% of my floor now has a bunch of empty cubicles. Kind of depressing. My department is safe.....but you never know.

Funny how companys want you to be loyal to them, but they will lay you off in a SECOND if they think it will help their bottom line.

I used to do work for someone who did this. Apparently it is 100% commission, and the way you start making money is reoccurring bonuses based on existing customers. You don’t make any money for the first two or three years. Only once you have a ‘customer base’ do you start making anything.

Most of the insurance companies I've spoke with start you off with some type of salary plus commision to help you get started. Usually, after a year it turns into 100% commision with no salary. You will also likely need to get a Life and Health insurance license along with a Series 6 and 66 so you will be able to sell VUL's and Annuities. That's how you get paid the big bucks in the insurance biz.
