My major concern is whether these refugee "allstars" will be cleaning out the shelves of my favorite "syrup" at the stores. Prices could skyrocket.

First, let's recognize that he wrote 'The Debt – What America Owes to Blacks', I don't think that he's 'formerly un-jaundiced'.

Second, although the Fed Gov's response was inadequate/incompetent, this guy should not paint with such a wide brush. Look at the details of what individual Americans are doing for the affected Americans. Question the Fed Gov, but remember that it's the pressure from the people that have forced Bush to get off his arse and fly back down South.

We stopped at the local shelter here in Austin yesterday and there was a steady stream of volunteers and contributors. I just heard that they had little red buckets by the Rose Bowl and collected over $400,000 from passersby, as elsewhere. My neighbor is working through the night preparing another local facility for 5,000. Five busses are headed for Breckenridge Hospital. This is being repeated all over the country.

It's not the American public who've failed to support our brothers and sisters from NO.

Major oil spill feared on Mississippi River

Fearing a major oil spill southeast of New Orleans, officials on Saturday monitored what they described as an “oil-like slick” on the Mississippi River and near two petroleum storage tanks.

“We are mobilizing now,” Jean Kelly, spokeswoman for the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality told MSNBC.com. Teams “will be going out to the field today.”

In a statement late Friday, the department said that “the slick is visible and is leaking into the river from an area near two storage tanks. Because the area is not accessible at the moment, there is no way to verify that the tanks are the cause of the leak. Also, there is no confirmation on how much of the product, which appears to petroleum based, has leaked.”

Riverfront Mall is on fire. All that development along the river they did for the 84 World Fair that really rejuvenated that city. sucks

NEW ORLEANS — The last 300 refugees in the Superdome climbed aboard buses today bound for new temporary shelter, leaving behind a darkened and stinking arena strewn with trash.

The sight of the last person — an elderly man wearing a Houston Rockets cap — prompted cheers from members of the Texas National Guard who were guarding the facility.

"I feel like I've been here 40 years," said Louis Dalmas Sr., one of the last people out of the arena. "Any bus going anywhere — that's all I want."

Inside and outside the Superdome — including the concourse around it and a 50-yard bridge that connects it to a shopping center — was a sea of garbage up to 5 feet deep. ...

Why is the Red Cross not in New Orleans?

The state Homeland Security Department had requested--and continues to request--that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans following the hurricane. Our presence would keep people from evacuating and encourage others to come into the city.

The government is continually refusing help from anyone, foreign or domestic. I don't understand why.

That said, The Red Cross is not a military organization, and it's members are not armed. As their site mentions, New Orleans is not the safest place to be right now.

Just discovered this thread.... what an awful disaster in New Orleans.

Maybe because begging for foreign help requires a bit of humility. Bush does not strike me as a humble guy, except when he fakes it. After seriously angering most of the world because of his invasion of Iraq, the thought of needing to beg from the very people he so contemptuously hacked off must really gall him. So he stubbornly refuses any help, and America suffers.

    sounds all confusing ................

    AP Story

NEW ORLEANS - Police shot eight people carrying guns on a New Orleans bridge today, killing five or six, a deputy chief said.

Police fired on the group after they attacked contractors with the Army Corps of Engineers on their way to repair a canal, a Corps spokesman said.

The shootings took place on the Danziger Bridge, which spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.

No other details were immediately available. Earlier reports the the contractors were among the victims were incorrect.

    -----------

If those gunmen did indeed attack those engineers, then I for one am glad the police took care of them. :)
