Wow! fvv was damn strong and good. It is a shame from gms that he went undrafted, considering the bums getting drafted all the time.
It should be noted that FVV played fours years of college ball. I’m sure he bulked up some during those four years. Reed doesn’t look puny or weak to me at all for someone who just turned 20. He actually looks really solid.
Well, if you believe his weight then and now, it looks like he's put on about 20 pounds. Agree Reed doesn't look puny, but the worry was always what would happen if he gets switched onto somebody that's 6'4" or bigger and if he's able to harass them or steal the ball as well as he did in high school. Don't be soft, Reed!!!!
Thanks for bringing back this thread. I needed the laugh on how silly people are here on CF's I compared Reed to "bust" Jimmer Fredette......I need to apologize to Jimmer
It’s surprising Reed hasn’t been sent to the valley to get his mojo back, particularly with Holiday ripping the nets at his current pace
@peleincubus Those stats presented for JJ Redick were first 5 years minus 1st year from what I can see. I believe my point was, like JJ Redick, Reed would need several years to get up to par. Rockets drafted Reed before.....they should have known better than to do it again.
sending Reed there rn might 'hurt' his tradability -- thus, Cam being in the gleague just means Cam won't be traded this coming deadline in the past, Stone/Silas had been playing the likes of CWood star minutes hoping to sell them high on trade deadline [they were the ones playing like stars while JG was just standing at the corner waiting for the ball to be passed to him -- if they'd let him, that is -- so the claims that JG had been dominating the ball in his first two years is just false]
I did consider Bryce Drew as a comp for Reed. He was also an exceptional college three point shooter with a similar build. He was also a 4 year player and an unquestioned lead guard on that Valpo team. Reed didn't have that role in his 1 year at Kentucky, but shot a higher percentage. At this point, we don't know if he'll be Bryce Drew or Mark Price. I do think he has a higher learning curve than Bryce with age and college role. We'll have to wait and see. I will say, if Reed can begin to do the thing we thought he'd do (3pt shooting), it will be a huge unlock for the offense.
I got mocked by the typical honks for reading the tea leaves on this one. Reed is smol, and is getting outplayed by Aaron Holiday. Hasn't somehow gloriously corrected our range shooting woes, has contributed to them. Any chance he has of reaching some of these wild ass hot takes are at a minimum 2.5 years away. I wanted Knecht. NBA sized, NBA ready off-ball shooter. Not some 4 year project who needs playing time on a team with precious little of it to spare. Those honks couldn't even see past their own heartbubbles to know that I was hedging on Jalen, their worst enemy, by taking an obviously superior player. No, no, no, I dared speak out against the will of the honk. What now honkies?
Through their first 24 games: Reed Sheppard.....3.8 pts.....1.0 Rebs.......1.3 ast....35.7 (FG%).....30.4 (3P%) *Jalen Green.........15.6 pts....3.0 Rebs.......2.2 Ast....39.9 (FG%).....32.5 (3P%) (*Often put in the corner by Silas as spot shooter) I know if Jalen Green was white people would be ok with 3.8 pts a game from the #2 pick. DD and BobbytheGreat were calling Jalen a bust after two weeks. If Reed (#3 pick) was a black man then they would call Reed a bust.......but instead it's, let's wait. 3.8 pts this year......maybe 6 points next year.......then 9 points in year 3.......and then 25 points per game in year 4. For sure!!! The guy can't get his shot off, it's easy to see.
At least you accepted the challenge, ya honk. Now if only Reed would accept the challenge? Maybe there'd be something to argue about. I hope he does. I'd love to be wrong, have been plenty of times. On this one though, I nailed more of these shots than Kentucky Reed.
It's so funny on this board, there's no time where you just be a fan. Like everyone's arguing about Reed's future, but it's not like if he pans out then everyone is going to laugh about it and enjoy it. They're just going to start nitpicking on technicalities and good/bad stretches to death, fighting over some new set of data. I always ask people to make bets or predictions because otherwise some can whine forever. You need a closure point, you're committing to an idea and you need them to commit to an idea too just so you can at least look back at your posts and come to some kind of conclusion. That's the downside of comparing players and ******** on other Rockets to promote your favorite Rocket. Just stays bitter all the time - before, during and after success/failure. I'm a big Green fan, but I can't imagine missing out on watching and enjoying this whole core grow. Can't imagine not rooting for one of our core guys even when they're screwing up as young guys. That's the best thing about this phase of Houston Rockets history. Honestly of all the iterations I've watched (Hakeem, Yao, T-Mac, Harden, Howard, CP3, etc) this core has been the most fun. These players are fun to watch on and off the court plus they love defense and work hard. We've never really had this and it's rare in league history to have such a high proportion of willing young defenders. Reed is a great addition to this core. Just ignore his draft position for a second. If it takes 1.5 years from now to put some muscle on him, tighten his handle and improve his defense but what we get is a 6'3 Fred Van Vleet with a better jumper - that's amazing for us. Can totally be a top 5 PG in the NBA if he can become an above average defender under Ime's watchful eye. He's the perfect fit for this roster. I don't know what people are complaining about. We will eventually need a 6'3 guy who can really pass, shoot and play defense. Fits next to Amen/Green/Whitmore/Sengun. I don't get how a rocky start - and all our young guys had rocky starts - means that his trajectory has changed. He's learning a new position. He's learned more in a couple of months than KPJ learned in 2 years. Let's do it right this time. When you play 10-12 minutes, it's hard to have stable stats and shooting rhythm but he is getting there. He's played the equivalent of 7.8 games if each game is 36 minutes. For those games, he'd be averaging roughly 11.6 points on 12.5 shots, 4 assists to 1.8 TO's and almost 2.5 stocks (!!!). The all-time great Steph Curry (stretched to 36 minutes) started his first 8 games 10.4 points on 9.4 shots, 6.5 assists to 2.74 TO's and 1.2 stocks. That's one of the greatest players of all time and unquestionably the highest ceiling a player the size/archetype of Sheppard can reach. With Curry having the benefit of more rhythm (averaged 26 minutes per game his first 8 games). There are lots of players who had similar stats at that point in their careers, it had no correlation whatsoever with whether that player was going to end up good or not. So to sit here and jump to conclusion as though you're being wise when you're talking about 8 games worth of basketball stats is extremely misguided. We don't know anything about him right now. The things we CAN know - attitude, fit, work ethic, month to month improvement - are looking like there's no reason to rule out him developing exactly as we expected when we drafted him. He'll be starting calibre in like 1-1.5 years or something. He'll be extremely raw right now. It's not magic. It's just player development.
#3 pick Sheppard 3.8 pts...1.0 Rebs...1.3 Ast.....35.7 FG%....0.6 TOV....30.4 (3P%) [first 24 gms] 4.6 pts...1.4 Rebs...1.5 Ast.....36.6 FG%....0.4 TOV....21.4 (3P%) [first 24 gms] #29 pick TyTy Washington Big difference between #3 pick and #29 pick. Nobody expects too much from the 29th pick in the draft. Even so-called experts expected Reed to contribute right away. None of them were saying wait a couple of years. Reed was a favorite to win ROTY this season. The front office should be nervous on missing so badly.
Missing badly. Read the post above yours. You are over analyzing too much. Taking not enough data to correlate an entire career. In years past you were much more sound in your analysis. How about this for a bet. By the end of the season @Dankstronaut and @coachbadlee ’s savior Dalton K and Reed will have a 3 point % within 2 points of each other.
Sheppard was just a bonus of the Harden trade. Whether he pans out or not it doesnt remove the accomplishment already made by the FO so they dont have to be nervous. As for Sheppard himself I think he can still be a good player but he is a lot rawer than expected and it might take multiple years to get him where they expected him to be. Was he a massive reach at #3? I think so. Can he still turn out good in the end? I also think so. In the mean time though it's def frustrating to see him suck at the one thing he got drafted for, thats for sure. Whats even more frustrating is the people here over exaggerating everything Sheppard does like it isnt an expectation for the 3rd pick to play well. Just watch when Sheppard shoots 2/3 from 3 and has 6 pts everybody here will go wild and start tagging you, me and coachbadlee on how wrong we all are and how we are clueless about how good Sheppard really is, we dont know ball, we are the worst posters on the board etc
