If you have a boy and a girl (in any kind of combination) and get them to breed they will be too close in the gene pool. It won't be too long before their offspring start mutating, resulting in deformation and early death. This happened to aristocratic families often throughout history and they were usually marrying fairly distant relatives. Starting this close together, though, would be disasterous.
