With the Texans having the cap space to pull it off, I really think it would be smart to offer a one year deal to Clowney, he already lives here, he already trains here, and he's one of the best defensive players against the run. If you really want to have a shot at surprising teams this year, pairing him with Anderson really moves the needle.
If he takes a cheap deal, I am all for it... I would like to keep $$$ space to be able to trade for Mike Evans tho
The Texans have something like 15 mil in cap space, Clowney likely takes 10 to get it done, Mike Evans would cost all of that minimum. I think Clowney moves the needle more and is more likely to sign.
I think the primary need is a WR1. We may have it among our variety of WR options - but Evans is a legit #1. Not sure if Clowney fits the culture (hence his departure from Cleveland). Definitely not offering him $10M
Av trade is unlikely given the massive cap hit, Evans being cut is most likely... and if you're him, why pick the Texans? Clowney actually might and he'd come in as either the best or second best defensive player on the team AND we could actually fit him in under the cap.
Do you know where Mike Evans is from? Where he spends his time doing his camps? Where he proudly calls home and spends most of the off-season? Where he went to college? Where his foundation is? Why would the Bucs cut Evans and not try to get something for him?? There were literally reports of some teams offering 2nd - 4th round picks and the Bucs wanted to see what their team looked like and declined the offers. Evans cap hit would be about $13M to the team acquiring him - less as the season progresses. You can offer Clowney $10M if you want... I hope Nick thinks better of it.
If we had to pick between Clowney and Evans, I’d choose Evans. Clowney seems to be more likely since he’s a free agent. Evans Metchie Dell Woods Hutchinson Brown/Collins Nico would likely be the odd man out with all the injuries.
Let's see if I have this right. Get the guy you can instead of waiting for the guy you aren't likely to get. Is this the basic argument?
There's that culture comment again. I keep getting crucified for even questioning or suggesting what it means in this context.
Similar, I want to get the guy we can get who would greatly improve the team while leaving us with some emergency cap space vs going after the guy we can't get who we don't really have the cap space for even if he were to hit his head and want to come here.
