I don't like a player that only plays 110 games a year then in a contract year plays the whole season.
Correa would be 37 at the end of a 10 year contract. Our current 37 year old player did okay this year winning a batting title and being a front runner for a Gold Glove.
Please keep him so I won't have to console my 9-year old son, who will absolutely lose his $hit when he leaves. Fingers crossed.
damn when a Hall of Famer who is known for being a little anti social calls you a leader and says he enjoyed playing with you, you know you’re respected
I guess analytics cannot quantify leadership skills... yet we do know that a manager is supposed to provide some sort of leadership/stability/influence that goes beyond simple lineup/bullpen decisions. Tough call. Only the Astros would be able to put extra emphasis on this having seen it first hand. Springer was also a leader and has had a similar influence in Toronto.
Crane has definitely improved in his ability to interact with the media and choosing not to constantly put his foot in his mouth (as was the case 2011-2015). Definitely re-iterated the emphasis that attendance leads to more $$$ leads to better payroll and hopefully better results which will lead to attendance.
Before the 2020 post-season, I thinking 50% of fans would have scoffed at the idea of giving him a max deal. I'm resigned to the fact at this point that he wants to go somewhere else, regardless of how much money is thrown at him, much the same way Beltran was following the 2004 season. Correa's defense makes him much more valuable than his offense, and that's where I think the Astros would see the real deficit if he left. The offense will survive, but the task should be to find a really exceptional defensive SS to replace him.
As if Crane would be dumb enough to create a negative headline the day the playoffs start... "Nah, can't afford Carlos. He will probably be a Yankee"
These kinds of discussions go on, even for "untouchable" players and should not be taken as a slight in any way. It gives you a feel for what other organizations think compared to your own.
Could it work out? Sure. But you have to look at the odds and alternatives. There are very few players who will max out earnings by only signing 1 year deals. There's a reason they want long term security. But giving it to them without rate reduction proportionate to the risk has been absurd. Here's what you can do. Offer him a 7 year $210M deal and a 10 year $210M deal and see which one he rejects right away. It's not about the length, it's all about the TOTAL. He's looking at $300M plus. If it takes 10 years, so be it. He probably wants $341.000,001 at least so he can be the highest paid SS.
People need to ask Correa's wife what she wants to do. If she's chasing fame then Carlos may have no say in where he wants to be.
