Have some family members planning on visiting from Pennsylvania and Dallas. They have never been to Houston. One of the family's has young children while the other is a couple in their early 30s. Was wondering if there were any attractions in town that the Clutchfans nation recommended for out of towners. family friendly: NASA Moody Gardens Children’s museum adult: Bars in midtown St. Arnold’s
NASA for sure is a good one. 1) Museum of Fine Arts 2) Museum of Natural Science 3) Astros game 4) Sprinkles (cupcake place in the Galleria) 5) ChinaTown (restaurants, massages) 6) Kemah BoardWalk
Forgot to mention the Galleria itself is cool for the shopping and restaurants. You/they MUST eat at Peli Peli if you go to the Galleria. It's delicious.
Take the family to Enchanted Rock, Comal river, pedernales state falls, natural bridge caverns, alamo, Schlitterbahn, Corpus christi aquarium. Aint nothing to do in Houston.
I would take them on a tour that highlights how awesome Houston is and how terrible Dallas is. Non-chain, Houston-faire restaurants and locations. The more hole-in-the-wall and delicious the better. Seafood, Pho, Korean BBQ, Houston BBQ, Cajun, real Mexican, Soul Food if they are down for it. Galveston on a weekday to avoid peak traffic/crowds. Pleasure pier, Seawall, then the Strand. There are also great bars there. Moody Gardens is always a distant third for me when I have people in town. Space Center Houston (NASA)…then some good Indian food Kemah Boardwalk would be a plan B for me. It doesn't really have that Houston vibe (too corporate) but it is a great/fun place to go. Museums if that's their bent. I would avoid some pansy-ass cupcake place for wieners. @TWS1986
Take them to the Buffalo Bayou Cistern. Near sunset, and if temperature is bearable, I like taking a stroll through the arboretum trails in Memorial Park and also the new trails in the Eastern Glades are awesome.
The museum district and zoo are all great. The Menil is also close and free. The Galleria is I guess a tourist attraction if you like shopping. NASA is definitely legit if you’ve never been. Lonestar flight museum is also close by. I’d definitely do Galveston. Walk the strand, grab some lunch. I’d skip Kemah, I’ve been at least twice and it’s overpriced trash. What do people do there? I’m open to suggestions. Houston has some great food from a variety of nationalities. That’s the highlight.
No to Kemah Boardwalk. Everyone who goes there is disappointed. I worked there when I was 16 as a Games Attendant and disappointment was common among the guests.
Damn this thread is a reminder how little we have to do in this swamp land we call a major city. But at least we got good eats. YAY OBESITY. I would take them around and show all the new roads we are building. Check out 288 toll road. 10 bucks to go 10 miles.
As someone who tries to travel a few times a year prior to COVID and visited places like Seattle, DC, NYC, Philly, Chicago,Miami, etc that’s my thought as well! trust me I love Houston but there’s not much to do it seems like other than eat..
NASA has changed a lot over the years….a decade or so ago there were more attractions there to see and the tram tour would take you to places such as where the astronauts train and such. I went just prior to COVID and the tram tour is an abbreviated version of its former self
We have amazing restaurants, bars, coffee shops.... But we have nothing that we can enjoy outdoors without feeling freaking miserable with the heat/humidity. Nothing scenic. No cool walkable neighborhoods. It's a great city to work, raise kids etc...but I won't ever tell anyone to come and visit me here.
Does the Budweiser plant on the east side still do tours? Those were pretty cool. With free beer at the end.
Museums and Symphony here is top notch. Restaurants are the main pull these days. Cistern is also something people don't expect. I've also brough my son to the Beer Can House and the Orange Show as well as the iron sculptures on 288 past 610 south.
