So... this was all 9 days ago. I want to take the time while I have the podium to point out two things: 1. The definition of what is “political” versus what is scientific is, as simply as I can state it, what somebody rich and powerful wants to dispute, due to their own self interest. In American history we can chart the rise of propaganda against its own people as beginning with the tobacco industry doing everything it could to discredit decades of evidence that smoking caused cancer. By the 60’s it had seeped into many industries including food and agriculture, placing the blame on animal fats amongst all things for the dramatic rise of obesity, heart attack, stroke, cancer, and many of the other major modern causes of comorbidity. Finally for the past three decades we have seen unprecedented amounts of money spent by the oil and gas industry, doing everything it could to discredit the conclusion of an entire field of scientists. Ultimately this has left us in our post truth reality, where any scientifically backed “fact” with enough money behind it can be fed into the propaganda machine of modern media and then be made to a political controversy. And without common truths on which to debate, the political discourse naturally breaks down. But, as the ending of the Chernobyl documentary presciently put it, “every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. Sooner or later, that debt is paid.” 2. I was talking to my other mid-30’s friends in various professions, and this conversation came up: “you know, if there was some outbreak that happened that flipped the mortality curve, and everybody under 40 had a 5-10% chance of dying while the rest were relatively spared, the old people in charge would just say, **** em, we can’t freeze the whole world’s economy just for this!” “That has already happened before, it’s called climate change.” Alright I’m out, RIP this thread.
