This was a comment. Nothing edited. 53 MIN AGO Dr. James Dixon, needs to decide who he's going to serve. The "B" movement, or God. Jesus is about to return, and he's focused on the name of the lake, which isn't going to save any souls. Is he also teaching this from the pulpit on Sunday morning? I'm sad for those who refer to him as their Pastor. The lost and spiritually blind, following the blind. Very Sad
I am in a Baytown remembers FB group and this came up and some facking Mouth breathers actually were arguing for keeping it...... I was like WTF is wrong with you, this is horribly racist. DD
The Houston port is very busy, not just oil. Even Katy is a major warehouse hub but yeah a lot of distribution centers in Baytown
Ya, the intent of the naming of the lake is obvious when it was initially called "Ni**er" lake. But of course the disingenuous "free speech" crowd are offended that people find this offensive.
Dirty Bay just voted to not rename Baytown Lee due to the "cost," and used to play Look Away, Dixieland every time we scored on varsity, so not holding my breath.
History of the term. NFSW language... https://www.ferris.edu/HTMLS/news/jimcrow/question/2017/august.htm
Ask and answered. ______ In the not-so-distant past, many geographical locations included Niggerhead in their names. In 1962, the U. S. Board of Geographic Names tried to address this by changing many of the names; however, there were local communities who refused to follow suit. In 1971, the University of Vermont (UVM), was “the owner of 320 acres of land surrounding two-thirds of Niggerhead Pond and including what appears to be the southeast portion of Niggerhead Mountain.”[11] In that same year, about 300 UVM students staged a protest to call for a change in the names of Niggerhead Pond and Niggerhead Mountain.[12] It was relatively common in the 1960s and into the 1970s to witness disputes about whether a community should rename Niggerhead Pond, Niggerhead Mountain, Niggerhead Lake, or some similarly named place.
I'm black. Baytown has a lot of good jobs. The port keeps it busy no matter what's going on oil. It won't stop people from moving there
Yeah, I went to Lee, and got in several arguments with my old REDNECK pals saying I was fine with changing the name since RE LEE was a traitor to our country - they struggled with the concept....that was not surprising as most of them struggled in HS anyway. As for playing that song....Lee Football sucks, it was ok in the 80s it is terrible now....so I doubt it gets played much. DD
I played (practiced, dressed and traveled) there during the mid-90s QB run: Alfred, Stoerner, Roberson and Tate all played D-I, got our butts whupped by Humble in the first round against David Boston who was playing both safety and wide receiver; but beat all the East Texas traditional outhouses. Half the kids in our GATE class called me Oreo, Carlton, half-white, cookie, fudge, double-fudge, burnt trash and black trash every day for being the only black kid in the section, but they all still get a friendly and nostalgic Facebook post every birthday.
Funny thing about Robert E Lee was that he -was asked by Lincoln to lead the Union, but couldn't turn against Virginia - fell into the "we lost, let's accept it, end slavery, and come together crowd" instead of the "I'm forever bitter and hate the north" crowd that others did.
