If McConnell brings his caucus to the party, that will be an impressive display of raw Senate power. McConnell must have the votes to be swinging his dick around like this.
republican senators pressuring mitch mcconnell from following his conscious and do the right thing for once... And yet... trump... "He did, literally, the worst thing that an American president could ever do." Because, party over country...
Trump must have promised something to that weasel, Lindsey. He denounced Trumpism the day of the attacks, but was back on his side immediately after that. Did Trump reveal to Lindsey some damaging gossip he has on him and the rest of the republican party that he is willing to spend the beans on if they vote to impeach him?
I don't know, but all of those pushing a vote against Impeachment are as bad as Trump. They are traitors to their country, Democracy, law and Justice if they believe Trump should get benefits for life, paid for with our tax dollars. Voting against Impeachment is a signal that they choose party over anything else, and will back a seditionist lying traitor, who will stop at nothing to continue holding power in this country. As if letting 400,000 die wasn't enough by charging up the selfish, and the mislead by emission of truth on the dangers of Covid to flaunt no masks as a party stance. Oh, Trump lost, time to lie and cheat. Let's sue sue sue, demand recount after recount, and if that doesn't work we will stir up so much hate with lies and propaganda to cast doubt on the election. Trump and his guys knew what they were doing to incite this. They spread so much propaganda and lies and stirred up the radical gun toting radical groups as Trump Patriots, urged them to storm the Capitol packed and loaded, and sat back and watched. A vote No makes them just as guilty as Trump.
I find the Graham quote very chilling: "There's no way to be a successful Republican Party without having President Trump working with all of us and all of us working with him." Presidential and American historians are already pointing out that Trump tried to subvert democracy. He tried strong-arming everyone he could to literally cheat and overturn the election. He created a huge false narrative about the election's integrity, as falsified by every court in the land. He contributed significantly to fomenting a mob attack on the Capitol as electoral votes were counted. So, if Graham says the GOP must work with Trump, that says they must collaborate with anti-democratic forces. As so many of us have said, this election wasn't the end of the trouble. For Graham himself, it sounds a lot like an abused spouse telling the police officer at the door: "No, I fell down the stairs. Look, officer, he's a good, good man, and i don't know where I'd be without him" ... with Trump glowering over his shoulder, watching him speak. Jesus H. Christ have mercy on us and particularly on the Biden administration.
Don't give Mitch too much credit - he was all to happy to go along with the Big Lie until it became politicallly less convenient for hiim to do so but after the point that it had become insanely dangerous. Now it's a difference of degree. While I don't doubt he's against MAGA hordes defiling the seat of government, his goal of destroying the governement, undermining democracy, and hurting people along the way to create a one-party state is not that much different from Trumpism ultimately
Yep. Movie mobster wise, Trump is Mo Green and McConnell is more like Hyman Roth... or Barzini, pending precise plotline.
Mitch used the same calculus but came up with a different answer. Trump has to go, if the Republicans want to regain Congress and the POTUS.
Trump just lost his second election, by 7 million votes. If Lady G thinks they need to hitch their wagon to that star, fine, you will lose again. But McConnel is always self-serving, what he wants more than anything is to be the Senate Majority leader again in 2020. Everything for him is a calculation of political power, he wants more power than anyone, so more than Trump. He is making statements that set him apart from Trump, but not so unequivocally that he can't back out of them if the Trumper's gain an 'in-party' voting edge. He also needs to prevent Trump from splitting off a Patriot Party and dividing the traditional GOP into two uncompetitive minor parties. Trumps failure in Georgia showed him how little Trump cares about the GOP ( we know he only cares about himself) It will be a very interesting political chess match to watch. A lot may depend on how quickly Trump is charged by N.Y., Georgia or the SDNY or how quickly he is brought into civil court on sexual abuse charges.
That's what he said, but the truth is something like this...."There's no way to be a successful Republican Party without BOWING to President Trump and all of us working FOR him." Politics at its finest, Graham and Mitch would sell there mother to the devil if it would get them reelected
There's no way to be a successful Republican Party without the significant percentage who are Trump only voters. it's riding the tiger...again. since we are doing music this week, Grace Slick!
Even if Senate votes to convict trump, accountability should not end there. Cruz, Hawley, Moe Brooks, Guiliani, and too many other trump sycophants to list should be punished to some extent as well. Cruz and Hawley should be thrown out of the Senate and never allowed to hold public office again. One by one, I hope Biden's new Attorney General deals with all of these liars, enablers and insurrectionists appropriately.
At the risk of psychoanalyzing Graham I’m trying to imagine how much self loathing he has. If it was me I would have a hard time looking in the mirror every morning after how he’s essentially betrayed the memory of one of his best friends and how’s he’s betrayed his own better judgment for Trump.
Lindsey Graham don't want to be primaried in South Carolina. Mitch McConnel saw the beating the Republican, Trump took in suburban America. He doesn't see that coming back with a Trump-led Republican party and want to cut tie. The attack on Congress provided some political cover and impeachment is an opportunity to do so. ps. he's probably also royally pissed about GA runoff.
I don't think McConnell has the stones to convict, but this is going to be fascinating to watch play out. The RNC knows they can't win without Trumpistan behind them, but they also can't win without the Suburbanites (whom frown upon the whole violent insurrection thing). They have an awfully small needle to thread here.
It is also really strange considering Trump's most hardcore supporters are already dumping him en masse.
