I hear you on the Ritz and lately I have been doing a sleeve and some whipped cream cheese. Townhouse and Club crackers can get it as well but I cannot eat them like Ritz.
There’s a calzone at a place called Paul’s on louetta that is probably the best in the country. I’ve been eating it for 20 years and have never even tried the pizza from there because the calzone is so damn good. super California burrito with verde from Arandas is also a contender.
I find it disturbing that you have eaten there so long and have never tried their pizza. Looked them up and those pizza egg rolls look interesting. I also find it disturbing that you eat your calzone while you stare at high school chicks across the street. Youre a father now dammit. Super California ftw.
I’m sure the pizza is great but I have a calzone budget and it simply won’t allow anything to take away from it. While I’d love to sit there and make high school girls feel uncomfortable I’m a solid take out guy. I’ll drive 20 minutes home just to eat on my couch. The only time I stay and eat at a place is if drinks are involved. They have this ramano seasoning that they put in everything that I’ll buy by itself to throw on anything Italian that I make or lesser pizzas that are closer/frozen. the super Cali burrito I’ve probably been eating for 20 years too. Back when Arandas only had a couple locations. We used to go to the one on 1960, they were open till at least 4 may have been 24 hours, and would serve us beer all night as high schoolers. Legends. The real “crack” is the verde though. I could literally drink that ****. Every time I order from there I get a 32oz container for my meal and several after.
Man, there used to be an Arandas where Im at and then it closed. Its all good though, cause I support this mom and pop taco shop that makes a bomb burrito and gordita as well. Also, YES, on their green sauce. I also used to get a great calzone at a small chain called Mazzios, sadly they have closed and gone away now too. I miss a good calzone and nobody around me makes them anymore. I want a calzone now dammit.
Paul’s is a one off. They opened another location around 10 years ago that didn’t work out and I was legitimately distraught thinking they might go down. They’ve changed ownership 3 times since I’ve been going and I’ve told every owner to call me if they were ever thinking of closing. I need those recipes to remain intact. Arandas quality may have gone down a bit since expanding but at least I don’t have to worry about them closing shop. Plus there’s an abundance of awesome taquerias in Houston the rarity of finding a great calzone in the south is like hitting the lotto. I could write an ode to this ****ing thing. where do you live I don’t remember catching it?
