New York Yes they did to get AD Yes they did and Giannis took years to develope, they also tanked for Parker LA By having superstars which they got through tanking
Lakers aren't good because they tanked. Their good because Lebron wanted to play for the Lakers. Clippers didn't tank. Their team was literally the 8th seed. Warriors didn't tank, they were always making moves to get better. Celtics didn't either. Where in there screams tanking? Yeah, they sucked in 2013 but remember that's when they fleeced Nets, they traded their big three so of course they were going to be bad. 6ers are the only team that actually did it and if the goal is to be the 6ers then I don't know if I want that.
For a top player in this league. Cause otherwise we are t getting that pick. We have to tank. There is no use not to. Team psyche will be fine. You are being over dramatic.
Yup but also they had assets to get AD. Which was done with tanking. LA. yes the Warriors did, they got those players by being bad stop it. celitics got the number one pick in Al Jefferson which they used to trade for KG, that’s what started this whole thing.
The thing is being slightly worse now barely improves your chance of getting a top 5 pick. Before, it mattered, now...it doesn't. You're talking about moving up 0.5% now or 1% more of a chance...they just flattened it out to discourage this exact thing.
New York what? The Nets didn't tank??? Did you miss them playing the playoffs the past few years? Lakers aren't a top team without Lebron, who knows if AD even goest there without Lebron. Tanking for Parker? That helped them how? Clippers did not tank. They simply didn't.
I used these teams as examples to support my argument about winning culture is overrated. Lakers were at the bottom of the league for 6 years, and when they get Lebron and AD, they win a championship; Celtics only had 4 playoffs appearances in the 12 years prior to the 08 big 3, and they won the championship immediately; Warriors, only 1 playoff appearance in 18 years, once Curry, Klay and Draymond developed into stars, they started winning championships. Clearly, talented players are more important than a winning culture, that's why it's overrated. Besides, Lakers did tank, that's why they had assets to trade for AD. Now think about this, you'll have to tank 6 years to get enough assets to build a championship team, even though the best player in the world is willing to join as an FA. That's how hard building a championship team is, so for small market teams you'll have to gamble at times, maybe we get our next Hakeem next draft, who knows. Besides, Lebron's willingness to join the Lakers is largely due to that they have enough assets to trade for a second super star. Same case when he made the decision to go back to the Cavs. Sure, tanking is not the best strategy to build a championship team. The best strategy is being at NY or LA so superstars join you as FAs. But if you don't get this option, you'll have to go for the second best.
Awesome. I will be rooting for the Rockets to lose every game which they will be able to do easily while still getting the young players on the team plenty of playing time. I'll also root for the Thunder to lose every game. Next year Brooklyn and the Bucks to lose as much as possible. All to increase the odds the Rockets get a better pick. Because the team is going no where this year and with Covid it's the perfect year to try and increase those chances. Next season most likely I will flip that and hope the Rockets keep improving every year with cap space and the picks owed leading to good role players that can improve over time or even a great player hopefully and/or some of those picks being traded to combine with a young FA the Rockets sign along with hopeful improvement of Wood. So you can keep hoping for .500 season but I'll be pulling for a top 4 pick and someone to be excited to watch next season to play with Wood. Good luck
No the Warriors didn't lol. Trust me, I know because the Warriors are almost a second team (that I used to root for outside of the Rockets...) because of family being from the Bay. I still remember telling my dad how Barnes was a good pick and he'll work out for them and how Bogut was a nice pick up...when they were trading for Jamal Crawford when he was relevant to try and win more games and get into the playoffs. They never tanked, they continued to make moves to build around Curry...who they drafted because Ellis got hurt the previous year along with other players on their team and Curry was never really healthy those years, turned his ankle 3x a week.. Tanking teams don't draft around the 10th pick either, especially since then when it mattered where tanking would basically guarantee you a top 3 pick. Warriors were drafting 7-10 for basically all those years.
There are multiple ways of acquiring talent, but things are aligned for us to use the draft these upcoming seasons. The lottery odds just made it so you don't have to shamelessly go for being the worst just the bottom of the pack.
Not true. Trading a great player in Lowry for a high value pick is a tanking move. The Toronto pick was the key to the trade. Morey is on record telling the owner we were going to be terrible that year.
New York is a spot for FA. Houston is not they never get AD without tanking though lol they won 38 games the East... lol yea I guess they didn’t tank. But Giannis also took 7 years to get to where he is now. And that’s one example among the many tanks that have worked LA. They also got assets with Chris Paul who only wanted to go to the Clippers because of LA and Griffin who they got by tanking.
LOL... Kawhi is completely a hindsight thing that went through the Spurs system next to aging HOF players. While the draft is somewhat of a crap shot, the better talent is more often picked earlier. Getting Harden without tanking was a low probability move.
Based on teams tanking and it being fine. You say countless like there are counter arguments to what these players have said
Do you remember when Lebron first came to the Lakers? Did they do much winning then? Even when he did play they were a mediocre team. They only became a good team when they shipped out the rookies for vets and added AD. You can't count tanking as "Not making the playoffs." That's not what tanking is. Lowry's rockets would also be 'Tanking' by that definition. The Warriors simply never tanked. You don't tank to draft 11th in the draft. Lakers didn't even have the assets until they flattened out the draft and doing that gave the Lakers a high draft pick. Pels were unwilling to trade AD to the Lakers until that point and also Lebron went to LA to be Hollywood. He could have gone any other place to actually win. Hell, he could have come to Houston to play with CP3 and Harden but he wanted to be Hollywood and play for a historic franchise. Only the Lakers draw FA like that. Knicks, Clippers have a bad history at drawing FA. Nets too although they were in NJ for a long time. No one wanted to play for the Clippers until recently.
Nah it wasn't hindsight, most people here wanted him at 14. As for Kawhi being a result of the Spurs system that's completly unprovable. It's like the argument that Phil Jackson had some impact on Kobe or Jordan that made them great. It's a chicken or egg argument that you can't really prove or disprove.
Now you’re talking about outright purposely losing games which the team will not do, so it’s a waste of time to even talk about it.
Tank or a targeted 3 year bottom out..... Semantics. Clippers got Griffin with the #1 pick.... Warriors got Steph with #7.... Celtics get Tatum and Brown with #3 picks..... Getting high draft picks is a viable way of building a good team along with shrewd FA acquisition/cap management
