Notable teams coached: spurs: 1992-93 Spurs- took over 21 games into season Led spurs to 39-22 record turning around they season and making playoffs. Results: 2nd round exit 1993-1994: 55-27 another decent season but lose in 1st round in 5 games sixers: 1994-1995: 24-58 1995-1996: 18-64 Cavaliers: 2001-2002: 29-53 2002-2003: 8-34 league worst record fired by cavs mid season replaced by Keith smart. The very same summer cavs draft lebron and funny enough HIRE PAUL SILAS LOL. John Lucas hasn’t had a winning team in almost 3 decades. Even if u wanted to hire him as a head coach. This isn’t his decade, this isn’t his era. He is nothing more than an assistant. He doesn’t have the qualifications to be a Head Coach in 2020 in my opinion. The nba is much different game from 2003 even. the only positive I think he brings is team chemistry. But X and Os wise we don’t have someone competent enough to draw up decent plays. Morey gone so there’s no one from Upstairs telling u not to shoot from midrange or to not post up. Or to let harden iso for an X amount of posesions. I’m just not sure how he fits today as a lead man on a coaching staff. His time is come and gone for that. To me he’s nothing more than a top assistant
Nothing besides being buddies with Westbrook and Harden it’s the only reason he’s even being considered
He is one of the best human beings we have in the organization and a true, proven leader of men. He is a basketball lifer that the players respect. He was a stud player himself, and got handed some doo-doo rosters after his Spurs stint. What concerns me isn’t so much Lucas, but more the lack of money we appear to be unwilling to spend for the entire staff. I’d rather have JVG AND Lucas, or Silas AND Lucas. If we choose Lucas, we lose out on both. Also, If we have lost our edge in analytics, we are toast. Think like the Lakers in here, and lose to the Lakers out there.
he is adept in microsoft word and powerpoint and can type over 75 words a minute. highly motivated and can work independently as well as in a team.
Stephen Silas honestly shouldn’t be that much more expensive then John Lucas. This would be Silas first head coaching gig.
He has COBOL programming skills and experience with the AS400 mainframe. He can find subterranean sources of water with only a “y” shaped stick.
Lucas is more than just a respected figure head that knows how to run rotations and call time outs. He will know the right thing to say to the media and players 98% of the time. He has help A LOT of players become not only better player BUT PEOPLE over the years. He is the right coach for Westbrook AND Harden because there is already a relationship there. He will need help but that is were the staff comes in. His current role is development and most of our players have grown skills—> Harden adds something every year. I think he will need a stronger than average coaching staff to be successful.
- Lucas can Bury the rockets into the Lottery - JVG might make them work harder on the defensive end, and has studied up on fast pace ball. Which retread would you like better?
He brings an easy out for anyone who has a shimmer of hope for Tilman to learn how to be a better owner during the Harden era.
I'm old enough to remember Lucas as a draft pick, Rocket player, junkie, tennis player and coach. The two memories that stick out... As a player, when a teammate missed a free throw Lucas would go to him and talk to him before the second free throw. Believe it or not kiddos there was a time when players just shot the second FT, no high fives, teammates, crossing yourselves or anything else, just shoot. As a coach with the Spurs he would call a time out, but not huddle with the players. He said they know what to do and can work it out by themselves. Considered innovative when they won, but came to a screaming halt when they began to lose.
Tilman: "Harden, who do you and Westbrook want as the coach?" H: "Lucus" Tilman: "Okay but more allowance money the next 5 years"
Because cobol is so old, finding a good developer is hard; most retired. Be surprised how many systems the government and companies (who have been around) run their critical systems on it.
