Lolz. The bigs on this team wish they shot like this. There's a big difference between a big who can make 3s and a shooter. ETA: And anyway, wing players on this team get plenty of shots from behind the arc. Frequently more than they deserve.
It appears to be pretty good to me. He's fit right in at RGV with the rim and 3 approach. This is not bball iq related but when you watch his interviews at UMASS and in the draft you can tell he's got it together. Very articulate. He's got good character and work ethic. And those intangibles definitely help a lot.
Interesting player...looks better to me than Covington, when we had him. Shot is legit. Length helps a lot. question is, why hasn't he made a roster?
I've only seen the highlights linked here, but I don't think his weight/strength would be a huge issue given his length and athleticism. He might be too slim to play a ton of PF, but there aren't many SFs who'd abuse him in the post. He's barely slighter than Antetokounmpo coming into the NBA.
For what it is worth: Putney played with the Perth Redbacks in Australia last year (this is 2nd level Australian basketball, so DLeague in Aus). He was 17 and 10 with 2.6bpg, and shot 16% from 3 (42.2% from the field). Maybe they played outdoors?? Ray Turner was MVP of that league for the same team as Putney (the team failed to make the playoffs). No highlights, surprised if anyone videos that stuff..
Putney is 25 though, the alphabet was only 18 coming in the league. The best comparison frame wise is probably our very own Corey Brewer, although Putney seems to have longer arms.
The guy has some interesting skills, but most of y'all are just overreacting to a small size. I hope Morey keeps him around for the season and he's battling for a spot in the off season.
[QU.6OTE=DrNuegebauer;10236995] DLeague in Aus). shot 16% from 3 (42.2% from the field).[/QUOTE] Was also a poor shooter in college all of but 1 out of his 4 seasons. Hid shot may he a fluke or on an off, unless he learned a new consistent shot overnight. 22% - 0.3 made per 37% - 1.5 made per 28% - 0.8 made per 31% - 0.9 made per Last season with the vipers, while averaging 42%, only averaged 0.9 made per game. So his shot isn't as legit as the highlights make it seem, perhaps he's just really hot this year. Either way, worth a 10 day contract.
He also played for the RGV last year, too. Shot 42% on 2.1/gm. He's shooting 40% this year on a blistering 7.5/gm. In fact, in 19 games this year, he's only shot less that 1/3 of his 3s in five games, and has 10 games over 40%...while shooting a lot of them. You know I'm the last person to get excited about players prior to seeing them in NBA games, but must admit, these videos have me excited about this guy enough to comment in this thread. He only averaged 10mpg, though. 2.1 3FA is a lot. You make it look small by showing the makes. And now it's 40% on 7.5 3FA/gm over 19 games. Sure the last three he's shooting a ton of shots, but he's been very consistent throughout.
I am with you getting excited. He played in Oz after last seasons Dleague. His sample size for this season is growing. Seems to be blossoming as a shooter (did Channing Frye do that? Suddenly hitting 3s everywhere?)
Great comparison player wrt his shooting and build He became a 3pt shooter suddenly at age 26, Putney is 25. I'll take Frye with Putney's handles and blocking skills.
This. He regularly was at the UMASS rec center playing pick up games with us plebs and was very approachable. I played one game against him and he blocked the crap out of me from nowhere when I was taking a 3 but other than that he seemed like a genuinely good guy.
