Should Rockets have extended Clint Capela’s contract last summer?

The Rockets’ young center will be a primary target in July, and Capela’s interior defense and rebounding will cover for the skilled players behind him.

In 65 games for the Rockets 2006-17 season, including 59 starts, Capela averaged 12.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Those are per-minute production rates on par with some of the best versatile big men in the game. That the 6’10” center did so while shooting a staggering 64.3% from the floor puts him in a class of his own.

    My personal opinion:
What last summer contract looked like:
    4 years 68 million (14,16,18,20 = 68)

What July 2018 offer sheet will look like:
    4 years 84 million (24,22,20,18 = 84)

If he starting salary increases from 14 million to 24 million, Rockets would have difficult time to re-sign Luc Moute and Ariza.

Rockets salary is 113 million after signing Paul (starting at 30 million)
NBA luxury tax line at $123 million ( or 125 Million)
reserves: need to add 6 minimum salary contracts

Capela’s cap hold will be much lower than any extension unless Clint was ready to agree to something stupid, that is why an extension didn’t happen. Morey needs as much flexibility as he can get this summer.

They were already over the cap, and I don't think they would've have had the flexibility to pick up Tucker or Moute if they did.

No use over thinking a 65 win team in hindsight.

At this point, it's half luck, half determination, half hustle.

So hard to say, rockets seem like they want more stars if the season doesn’t pan out but Idk if losing capela is worth trying to grab a star considering getting a good center these days is hard

    no, it is not true.

Capela contract deadline date is October 16, 2017

No because last year Capela got lost on the playoffs and we didn’t know if he was going to improve more. His free throws were still not decent. It was better to wait and see what he brought this season.

Also the system and Harden and Chris are what makes Capela so great in the offense.
Most of his points are on dunks now give him Russell and he would have to be shooting most of those inside the paint. Usually Adams gets the bail out passes from Russell.

So I think Clint has to know this and that he can still improve a ton in this system.

You have a good point, but you think DM did not know he would improve more?

Morey doesn’t extend players who aren’t MVPs. Harden is this only player he’s done it with

How motivated would Capela be if he wasn't up for payday?

You can't really say as today, there's always a risky part in these kind of decisions unless you're talking about expending a franchise player in his prime. Hell, even the extensions of Griffin and Wall were not good, imo at least. Let's see how the playoffs, the draft and free agency go.

No. Morey is all analytics and Capela has made huge improvements every single year he has played. No reason to believe at his young age that the trend would end.

Capela is JAP. People like Joe Cheese, Chianuanau Onauanuanku, Dwayne Deadman, Jeff Withey, Thong Maker, Jared Uthoff etc can equal his production if given minutes
