[NCAA Football] Nov. 16 Polls & BCS Rankings

Texas jumped OU. Not sure if this will last if OU dominates their next two games but it is a good sign for now.

 

And it continues, as many of us predicted. After gaining 49 points last week, Texas picks up 31 more this week and passes OU.

Again, it's important to note that that just like last week it's not about this weekend's results. No one is that impressed by beating Baylor or beating Kansas. It's the persuasive nature of the head-to-head argument that is prevailing, as it typically does between teams of similar status.

 

I think everyone agreed that Texas would gain votes this week with a solid performance given that OU was off. The real challenge is when OU plays Tech on a Texas bye week, followed by a top 10 OSU while Texas is playing A&M. OU has a lot of opportunity to impress, while Texas doesn't.

That's true for Baylor, though that was in part a correction of the previous week's big drop from Tech. But lots of people were making a big deal about Texas' defensive performance against Kansas. I do think the head-to-head argument is gaining momentum, but beating the #2 team (and #10) would/should have an effect too. A voter can't honestly look at a team they rank #5 today, watch them beat the team they think is #2, and not think that team is any better than they were the day before.

The good thing is that Texas was able to pass OU this week, and hopefully will be able to extend their lead in the Harris poll. That gives them a bit of a cushion as some voters will change their minds. It's just a matter of how many. At this point, Texas has probably peaked both in the computers and polls (barring a blowout against the Aggies while OU struggles to some wins), so it's a matter of holding on as OU makes its charge.

 

Seriously.... Someone Utah needs to be ahead of USC. Is Utah better? No. Did Utah beat Oregon State? Yes... Could one argue that the Mountain West is almost as strong as the Pac-10 this year? Well... Ya maybe. TCU, BYU, Utah, Navy, put Utah ahead of USC. Geez.

 

Florida being above UT is a joke.

Fair enough. But it doesn't matter. The Alabama game will decide if they are ahead or behind UT either way. So really it doesn't make a difference where they currently stand.

 

I don't mind Florida being ahead of Texas being that they have look very impressive and blowing out good SEC teams the past month or so.

But Florida receiving any #1 votes is ridiculous. They honestly think that Florida is better than the undefeated Bama and Tech?

 

Yea but the BCS standings before that game will determine whether or not we make it to the Big 12 Championship game..

 

But... Texas should be ahead in the BCS.

 

Again, as predicted, a huge, gigantic increase for UT in the Harris... they were up 44 points last week... this week, they're up 101, for a net gain of 57 points.

Will OU make some of it back next week, if they win? Absolutely. But it's very unlikely it'll be enough. It's the head-to-head logic that is being persuasive, as it almost always is between two teams of the same class.

No it's not. Florida has put some beatdowns on some very legitimate teams and is looking more and more like the best team in the country.

 

I agree with this too. Nobody from the Big 12 can beat Florida. They would beat Texas by a lot IMO. OU or Tech has the better chance. Florida is solid all around. Someone has to find a way to take something away from their offense, Tebow running, or the the fast backs in the backfield spread, something... Big plays galore.

 

If they beat Alabama, it's not. Until then, it is definitely ridiculous. UT lost on the last play of the game to the No. 2 team in the country, on the road. Florida lost at home to a mediocre at-best Ole Miss team. Before anyone says anything, I agree -- it's not just about comparing the loss. It's also about comparing the wins. In terms of elite, top 10-12 teams, UT has beaten OU, Missouri and Oklahoma State. Florida has beaten Georgia... and that's it.

If Florida were to beat Alabama, then they'd have a case to be ahead of UT. Until then, their resume just doesn't stack up.

 

I never understood if it was straight resume... Or people should take into account how the team looks. Its coaching history. And its talent level. Florida took awhile to get the ball rolling and now they look like a juggernaut. They just blew out and scored 50+ on a better defensive team than any in the Big 12. If the voters didn't take into account all that stuff I mentioned then USC should never be held in such high regard.

 

They will beat Alabama, who seems to make a living off of winning through mediocre play. How in the world Tech is not ahead of Alabama is beyond me, but that argument will be settled in time.

But Cat, have you watched Florida in their past few games? No team has looked as good at any point in the season as the Gators look right now. I agree that the schedule tends to favor the Big XII, as it obviously has become the strongest conference in the country, but the level of play Florida has shown, especially in absolutely dominating the now #13 team in the country should put them ahead of Texas, IMO. I am scared to think what Florida would have done to a team like Kansas.

 

It's the inconsistency that bothers me, on the part of voters. The factors you listed are very legitimate. (Although I think each of the three Big 12 teams would beat Florida today on a neutral field, I understand where you're coming from.) If you want to base your vote based on look, talent, and what could hypothetically happen with a tougher or different schedule, then that's fine. But if you're going to do that, why not list Florida over Alabama? I think almost everyone thinks Florida is the better team. I think it's silly to use one form of logic for one comparison (Florida-Texas) and then a completely different one for someone else (Florida-Alabama).

 

And Texas just held a team with a better offense than any other team that Florida faces to 7 points (and those 7 points required a circus catch on a 4th and long). Your point?

 

No it isn't. If Florida and UT played next week on a neutral field, Florida would be favored.
