    treyk3 and BimaThug,

Correct me if I'm wrong, if we withdraw the QO before July 23rd, DMo's cap hit will drop to $4.4m (200% previous salary) versus the starter-criteria $5.8m QO out right now. And, if done before July 23rd, we also retain his Full Bird Rights. The only thing we lose is his restricted status. He's just a regular, unrestriced FA with full Bird status for Houston.

If that is the case, then no wonder Morey is waiting on signing everyone. He could be planning to use the extra $1.4m cap space gained by withdrawing the QO, then sign the rookies to 3ry deals, sign Nene with the room exception, then sign DMo with Bird Rights.

Am I right? Can we clear $1.4m in cap room by withdrawing the QO prior to July 23rd, and retain Bird Rights to DMo.

Look up the terms "revoke" and "renounce" in the CBA and you'll have the answer, heyp. Two different things.

In DMo's case, his QO is $4.43 million and his cap hold (for full Birds rights to re- sign him and go above the cap) is $5.72 million. So revoking his QO does not give us that extra $1.4 million of cap space. However........if he signs the QO (a long shot but something we would like to do ;) ), then we recoup the extra $1.4 million.

Now, we could renounce him completely and gain back the entire $5.72 million, thereby forfeiting his Birds rights and the ability to re-sign him and keep him (a definite possibility), which we could then use to sign Nene and the other kids (maybe even Terrence too.........). Oh...........and then we could sign and trade DMo after we sign everybody else (even though we lost his Birds rights), provided he didn't sign a contract with another team as an unrestricted free agent before we got a sign and trade agreed to and completed. ;)

    basketballholic,

You are confused in that response. I see at least three inaccuracies in that post. Do you want me to explain them?

Bottom line on the issues quoted above:

--Revoking the qualifying offer does NOT change the amount of D-Mo's ($5.72 million) cap hold.

--If the Rockets renounce D-Mo's rights (in order to create an additional $5.72 million in cap room), they CANNOT then sign-and-trade him without using cap room. While technically a player can still be signed-and-traded even after he is renounced, he still has to be signed to at least a three-year deal and cannot be signed with the MLE. A team must have Bird (or Early Bird) rights or cap room in order to sign and trade a player. So, in any scenario in which D-Mo's rights are renounced and the resulting room is used to sign other players, then D-Mo could only be signed-and-traded on a contract with a starting salary no greater than the Rockets' then-remaining cap room.

    thx.

Clarification question: What would have been DMo's cap hold had we NOT extended the Qualifying Offer to him, like we didn't to Terrence? 200% his previous ($4.4m)? Or does that "starter-criteria = to 9th pick" still apply whether a QO is used or not?

As a free agent with full Bird rights coming off the fourth year of his rookie scale contract, D-Mo's cap hold is 250% of his prior year's salary. That is where the $5.72 million figure comes from. It has nothing to do with the amount of the qualifying offer.

Had D-Mo failed to meet the "starter criteria" over the past two seasons, his (ordinary) qualifying offer would have been about $3.28 million. Instead, he met the starter criteria, entitling him to a $4.43 million qualifying offer. But since his cap hold is bigger than either of those amounts, this is a moot point for purposes of determining the Rockets' cap room if they want to retain D-Mo's Bird rights.

Need to stay dialed in. DMO news could be imminent between now and Sunday.
