Yeah, whoever needs to fix this defense. Offense can be addressed quicker with Watson. But I would think an overhaul of the D would be needed asap. I’d trade Watt also.
This is the elephant in the room. JJ Watt is as close to Houston's personal mascot as can humanly be. He is, unfortunately, not a star football player anymore. He's also due 15M+ non-guaranteed the next 2 seasons. That is top 10 DE money. It may be time to take ol' yeller out back.
It will be a war between the emotional and intellectual and... well, the Texans have no intellect, so.... Personally, I'd deal him if ANYBODY was dumb enough to give up a 2 or, lord have mercy, a 1. But this right here is the underlying shittiness of the Hopkins deal, laid bare. Trading Hopkins makes sense - if you can land an OBJr-like return. Otherwise, you are soooooo much better off with him than a trash return. Hopefully, JJ retires before they have to make any critical decisions with him.
I found the reason that Seth Payne is endorsing Eric Bienemy to be interesting and something that has flown under the radar. Unlike most people, it's not the KC scheme and playcalling that intrigues him. What he finds most appealing about Bienemy is the attention to detail and consistency and precision of how they execute that scheme. Even if Andy Reid is the sole architect and playcaller of KC's offense (which I doubt is actually the case), it's the OC's responsibility to coach and prepare the players to execute it effectively. To put it in simple terms, it's not the playcalls that allow KC to execute flawless screen passes, it's the coaching, specifically from the OC, Eric Bienemy. Scheme is one thing, lots of coaches can come up with good ones, but being able to coach a team to effectively and consistently execute that scheme is a lot more rare, and a lot more important.
I wasn't familiar with Bienemy as a coach until recently, but I do remember his great nickname from the old ESPN days. Eric 'Sleeping With' Bienemy, so he has my vote. Classic.
honestly i don't see anyone giving us anything of value for watt at this point in his career. i think it would just be best to let him retire a texan.
Wonder if anyone can transcribe this? https://theathletic.com/podcast/70-nfl-power-rankings/?episode=74
I feel like watching how this season plays out will help coaching decision. We are about to have a defensive minded head coach. If that helps the defense and BOB not being here to control the offense leads to the offense AND defense being a lot better, then maybe a Saleh head coach is better and we find a college OC like Elliot. If our defense still sucks and we need offense help, them go with offensive head coach and find a DC from Bama or something
