Verlander out with Tommy John

Was somewhat expected, although after this long of a wait I was becoming hopeful. This has been a damn year..

At this point, a rebuild is looking likely.

 

He will end up in NY with Cole.

 

Isn’t he rather old for this type of surgery?

 

Yeah, but no way he’s going to retire. Might as well do the surgery, no downside for him.

 

****ing **** **** ****. But well, not crazy surprising. Hope he gets better and recovers, but I don't think it's in an Astros uniform. Time to work on a rebuild.

 

Damn. Tough blow. I hope his return is with HOU, but who knows. Tommy John isn’t a career ender like it used to be, but JV is 37. Like others have said, I’ll cherish those moments he gave HOU. We truly watched greatness.

It’s also not going to spark some rebuild. We still have a great foundation for the next 4-6 years. As a side note, I believe teams often take insurance policies on their players, and I’m sure the Astros would’ve done that when extending a 36 year old pitcher. It’s a big blow, not downplaying it, but it’s not going to shift us into a rebuild.

 

Why?

Got Bregman, Altuve, Alvarez, Tucker until at least 2024 plus whoever they retain before then..Springer, Brantley, Correa, Gurriel, Grienke, JV. And an already deep farm with a $$$ spending owner.

 

Verlander won't pitch again until he is 39. The odds are in favor of him never pitching for the Astros again.

 

I am more saddened that it's another piece of the 2017 team that looks to be gone than the Astros not being able to compete in the next few years. Peacock, Devenski and Verlander due to injuries this week alone. Keuchel and Morton due to FA. Loved watching all these pitchers pitchers.

 

Or many teams period. We'll see.

 

This probably ends the question of if he would retire an Astro.

 

Cant say I am surprised. They pulled the whole "JV feels good. He is doing this and that now" and oh, btw, he needs season ending surgery.

 

I had a feeling. Bummer.

2020 has not been kind to the Astros.

 

so, possible return for playoffs of 2021 but most likely at '22 return?

And he's a free agent after '21. Not great but as mentioned above it could mean he's cheaper to re-sign.

 

I don't think it's necessarily stringing fans along either. I feel like when elbow injuries are serious like this, is a full recovery to avoid TJ realistic though? I wonder the stats or medical opinions on that.

 

The Astros knew he needed TJ back when he got hurt... the problem is Verlander didn’t think he did. I even posted at the time they expected it. So really this is more of a shrug of the shoulders.

 

They knew he was likely headed to surgery back when he was hurt initially. He wanted to give it a go. No the fans were not strung along, Verlander was sincere in his effort to avoid surgery... the Astros just knew this was the likely outcome.

 

It made no difference really. If he had surgery in July he was still out for next season.
