Dude just hits. There is no Astro I'd rather have at the plate in a RBI contact situation. Maybe Moises Alou.
I would do a 3 yr 30 mil with most of it guaranteed. Yuli's game is going to age well. Franco was the perfect comp.
The thing about Alou is he'd more than likely be on the DL for falling off a moped or some other lame ass accident.
Eh, it's the least of their worries right now. That option will still be there in a month. It wouldn't move the needle for Yuli one bit right now. I hope they end up signing Yuli to that rolling extension that Tim Wakefield got from the Red Sox in the mid-2000's. Just rolling $8-10m annual contracts until Yuli wants to retire.
Wow... Keith Law of Athletic... is a Yuli hater. https://theathletic.com/2910865/202...021-22-starting-with-carlos-correa-keith-law/ 26. Yuli Gurriel, 1B, age 38 2021 WAR: 3.7 / Career WAR: 13.8 Gurriel didn’t come to the majors until 2016, his age-32 season, but he just had one of his best years yet at age 37, losing power from 2019 but posting the best walk rate and BABIP of his career so far, while continuing his track record of extremely high contact rates. Over the last five seasons, Gurriel has the eighth-lowest strikeout rate among qualifying hitters, with a higher isolated power than anyone else in the top 10. He’ll turn 38 in June, and while he has actually improved his ability to connect with good velocity in the last three years, he doesn’t do much with it, and at some point soon that’s going to be enough of a weakness to materially impact his production — which, given his defensive limitations, means he’ll go from a solid regular to a bench piece very quickly. The Astros are very likely going to pick up his $8 million option. If they don’t, I’d give him a one-year deal for his contact rate, hoping his newfound patience sticks around, but he’s a bad first baseman and probably doesn’t have the power to be more than an average regular there or at DH.
All you have to see is "defensive limitations" to know Keith Law has no idea what he is talking about. It's not 2016 and he isn't just starting to learn 1B. What a joke.
In the comment section, he says gold glove consideration has nothing to do with actual quality of defense.
The dialogue on Yuli's defense: John K. Yuli Gurriel back to back Gold Glove Finalist = "he’s a bad first baseman" Keith Law @John K. Gold Gloves are not a measure of defense in any way, shape, or form. Mark L. Case in point—Lourdes Gurriel is up for a GG in left field. You @Keith Law But Total Zone Runs is, and Yuli is #1 there. Keith Law @Leonard C. I don't agree that it's useful for 1b at all. Ryan G. @Keith Law OK. So, how did you come to the conclusion that he’s “bad”? Nate W. @ryan G. An .820 RZR, down over 70 points from his 2019 number, is a huge sign. His -10 defensive value from Fangraphs places him in the "below average" to "poor" category. His Statcast defensive metrics are rather ho-hum as well. I might not go so far to call Gurriel "bad" defensively, but I would absolutely not call him elite or even good.
Keith Law was nearly hired by the Astros in 2011 as scouting director.... may be holding a grudge? https://www.mlbdailydish.com/2011/12/30/2670115/houston-astros-interview-keith-law-of-espn
