Comparing the Rockets roster with other West contenders

Switch us with the Clippers at PG because of Chris Paul, IMO, but other than that pretty accurate.

 

Power Forward is where we need to improve... I have confidence in DMO though he showed us a lot. Jones too... he just has to play his game and play strong.

 

Warriors should be #3 on the SF list. Barnes is a quality shooter and rebounder and Iggy just won Finals MVP. Duncan and Marc Gasol are also better than Deandre Jordan; better defensively and can hit their free throws.

 

I'd move our PGs down to #4 and rearrange the PFs to this:

1. Spurs - LaMarcus Aldridge and David West
2. Clippers - Blake Griffin and Josh Smith
3. Warriors - Draymond Green, Marreese Speight, and Kevon Looney
4. Thunder - Serge Ibaka, Nick Collison, and Mitch McGary
5. Grizzlies - Zach Randolph and Brandan Wright
6. Rockets - Terrance Jones and Donatas Motiejunas

 

That PG list is hard to rank, unbelievable how much PG talent there is in the West

Obviously Pop is #1, I'd probably put Kerr #2

I think Kevin is as good as the others but clearly behind those two

The Rockets beat the Clippers. Chris Paul destroyed us.

 

Still would like to see someone else than Tjones at PF. D-Mo should start, but there's some games where TJones looks like a stud and others where he looks like a goof, but in all games....he's absolutely terrible on D.

 

The Clippers should be 2 or 3 just because of CP3. And OKC > Houston at PF

 

One thing for sure, our roster is upgraded. Losing Smith was good, we were doing better with Dmo.

Every time I start to argue a ranking in my head, I end up agreeing with OP. So i'd say the lists are pretty accurate, maybe a minor change here or there.

 

It's really tough to do these rankings, because it all depends on how much you put into depth vs starters.

For instance Kawhi Leonard and KD are by far the best SFs, but then you look at their back ups, and both are fairly lackluster. Roberson is not a very good player, at least going by my eye test (granted I have probably only watched him play 5-10 times) and by looking at the stats he is very much unproven. Same thing with Anderson. He played very limited last season, and was mostly unimpressive from the time he did get. Did he make that big of a leap from year 1 to 2? I know he just won the summer league MVP, but we all know how that works.

Now you compare that with the Rockets and lets say the Warriors. There is not much of a drop off at all going from the starters to reserves. Harrison Barnes and Trevor Ariza are both mid-tier type SFs, but they both have proven veteran back-ups, who should both be in the running for 6 man of the year next season. So does the depth make up the difference in talent between KD/Kawhi vs Ariza/Barnes? Probably not assuming everyone stays healthy. But if we are accounting for injuries, I might take the Warriors or Rockets SFs vs OKC simply because of Durant's spotty health last year.

All in all, it is just extremely difficult to rank the rosters. Most are fairly close, and it's just going to come down to what you value more... depth or starter talent.

I will take them over the Spurs and there with Thunder. Kev Durant does not do it for the entire position.

 

Jones is certainly better than what he showed recently. This nerve damage was affecting him.

But he is the best trade chip the Rox got right now.

 

Tried to rank with a 75/25 ratio of starter to backup, and thought about who you would trade (ignoreing age and salery) for each other.
