Good guys with guns were on vacation. They'll be back Monday, problem solved.

If only we could ban all guns, then bad things would never happen ever again. Whatever we do we should focus on the tool and not the reason why they are being used.

You're being obtuse. Few want to ban all guns. Few only want to focus on guns. Most want a comprehensive solution which includes background checks and increased access to (mental) healthcare and more.

For someone who claims to be politically independent, you're really good at regurgitating GOP straw man arguments.

Even more discouraging is that there have been at least 74 school shootings in the US since Sandy Hook

More of an NRA argument. According to Obama both sides of the corrupt political spectrum are terrified of us (the NRA) so what is the point of this thread again?

Just because I don't support a political party doesn't mean I don't have opinions. The idea that you should blame the tool for the actions of the people who choose to wield it is ridiculous. We have a problem in this country with people who want to kill other people, that's the problem, not the tools they use to do so.

You do realize that unless it is an individual-to-individual sale there is already a background check involved, yes? All sales through a FFL - out of a store, at a gun show, out of the trunk of the car - require a background check to process; that is already the law of the land and has been for decades. If you are trying to stop individuals from selling guns to criminals, a law isn't going to change anything (because you know, they're criminals and don't give a **** about the law); the only thing you'd restrict is sales between law-abiding citizens. The background checks "issue" is a red herring.

If you can figure out a way to keep firearms out of the hands of mentally unstable people without infringing upon anyone's rights, please let us all know. That way we can revoke their driving privileges as well, which would probably save even more people. And I mean it, if you have any ideas let us know. I think we can all agree that we don't want firearms in a mentally unstable individual's hands, since it is the mental instability that is the true cause of the violent act.

That isn't for all states and for the states that face to face sales are legal both parties need to be residents of the same state and in that state.

Yes because that's the only way to kill people if you don't have a gun.

Thank goodness those guys in Boston didn't have guns during that marathon....

Nah, that's only in the UK and Australia, where they banned guns.

Unfortunately we have no way to track how most murders occur. It's a shame, let's divert our resources to ridding the country of pressure cookers. Surely that will solve the problem, good idea.

The requirement that FFLs conduct a background check on all firearms sales is federal law - it applies everywhere. Some states have laws mandating background checks on sales between individuals as well, but of course only law-abiding citizens will abide by those laws anyway.

My point is that mandating background checks on individual sales is not going to have the desired effect because only the law-abiding will adhere to the requirement. Criminals will simply ignore the requirement just as they ignore other laws.

LOL. The murder rate in the US is 5 times the rate in the UK and Australia. Just go away without polluting another thread with your trash.

Again, you are still focusing on the tools and not the reasons why they are used. Someone is just as dead when they get blown up by a bomb as they are when they are shot, methods are irrelevant motivation is all that matters.

The road fatalities are 4 times higher in the USA than the UK. PRoblem with that or are those deaths (which happen on public roads by licensed drivers) not as big of a deal to you?

And do you think that relatively high murder rate has anything to do with the culture? Particularly inner city "ghetto" culture where murder is glorified? Of course not, it's all because of inanimate objects. Couldn't possibly be anything else...
