Their stats so far in 2013 are so damn close: http://www.collegesplits.com/cgi-bin/csPlayer.cgi?pl=appelma42 http://www.collegesplits.com/cgi-bin/csPlayer.cgi?pl=gray-jo46
IMO, if Appel and Gray are essentially even, I think the Stros favor Gray. My thinking is 1) The Stros would love to pick up a bit of the OU fan base from North Texas ( ) and 2) They may still have reservations from last year about Appel and his agent trying to take them to the cleaner's on the signing bonus.
I dont know how much Roger knows about scouting, but I'm assuming this means Appel and Gray. I know this doesn't mean anything to y'all, but I never ever dream about baseball. Last night I dreamt I was watching the 2013 draft and the Astors pulled a wild card and drafted Kris Bryant, and he signed for 4 mil flat. The dream and my reaction (stunned/excited) to the pick felt so real lol.
Is that what you dream about??! =) I wouldn't mind with Bryant, I think I would like us getting Gray more.
Luhnow, scouts considering options for No. 1 Draft pick By Brian McTaggart / MLB.com | 04/22/2013 2:59 PM ET Like last year, when the Astros took 17-year-old Puerto Rican shortstop Carlos Correa with the top pick, there is no consensus No. 1 overall. The Astros are considering a handful of names, including Stanford pitcher Mark Appel, Oklahoma pitcher Jonathan Gray, Indiana State lefty Sean Manaea and University of San Diego outfielder/third baseman Kris Bryant.
Doubt it would happen. Likely a top 5 pick, which means he could expect that type of bonus even outside the top pick. $5M is a more likely figure for someone in Bryant's position. Dreams do come true though. I think more likely at this point is if Appel or Gray will bite at $6M. Could also target Meadows/Bryant/Frazier/Manaea in the $5M range, though I want no part of Frazier.
Frazier looks like a leader, dude just brings ALOT of energy to a game... About Kris Bryant dude can HIT...The only way I take Kris Bryant is if the Astros draft someone like Rodon next year... Kris Bryant stats are real good... .353/21/43 (with new Bats)
IIRC 21 homers leads college hitters. Kris Bryant stats AVG 0.353 OBP 0.529 SLG 0.897 OPS 1.426 The OBP might catch Luhnow's eye, which makes Bryant the leading dark horse candidate for 1.1.
So... what will the #1 candidates be doing this weekend? Mark Appel and Stanford will be travelling to Oregon. He's coming off his 2nd-worst start of the season, but he managed to emerge with the win against Arizona. Jonathan Gray and OU will be hosting Texas Tech. Gray will most likely be facing Trey Masek, who is expected to be a high pick in June. Indiana State is on the road, as they take on the University of Tennessee at Martin. Sean Manaea will start on Saturday. San Diego hosts San Francisco. Entering this series, Kris Bryant is hitting .352/.523/.883 with 21 homers and 44 RBI. He's drawn 50 walks and struck out 28 times, and he's also 6-8 on steal attempts. The 21 homers lead the nation. Rodon Watch: He'll start Saturday, as NC State hosts North Carolina in a massive late-season series. Austin Meadows and Clint Frazier will be preparing for the playoffs. Tonight, Grayson will be hosting Parkview, another perennial power in the Georgia high school ranks. Also, here is a tweet from Peter Gammons regarding the Astros' pre-draft workout plans.

Make of it what you will--The Astros are holding their pre-draft workout not in Houston butat Grayson HS in Georgiam Austin Meadows' HS
— Peter Gammons (@pgammo) April 26, 2013

Appel walked off with a 2-1 loss against Oregon. He went 8 1/3; the run that lost him the game was unearned. He allowed 8 hits, walked 2, and struck out 9 on 116 pitches (84 strikes).
This year he is striking out 10.75 players per 9 innings, 84 in 70.1 innings (Not counting today). Up from the 9.5 K/9 of last year. I hope this answers your question
84 in 116 pitches is a 72.4% strike rate. That's actually a season high in strike rate for him. I'm looking at all the archived box scores and here's what his pitch counts/number of strikes have been: 2/15 @ Rice: 80/47 (58.75% strikes) 2/22 vs. Fresno State: 105/74 (70.5%) 3/1 vs. Texas: 110/74 (67.2%) 3/8 vs. UNLV: 116/77 (66.4%) 3/22 vs. Utah: 107/71 (66.4%) 3/28 @ Washington State: 110/79 (71.8%) 4/5 @ USC: 108/73 (67.6%) 4/12 vs. Washington: 115/77 (67%) 4/19 vs. Arizona: 124/77 (62.1%) Of the 1,091 pitches that Mark Appel has thrown this season, 733 have been for strikes, so the season rate for him is 67.2%.
Wow I just realized I misunderstood the question. Is anyone else worried about the high pitch counts? Only one game below 100 pitches and most above 110. Isn't Stanford known for this?
Jonathan Gray vs. Texas Tech: 7.1 IP, 2 H, ER, 2 BB, 7 K on 110 pitches (76 strikes). That's a 69.1% strike rate.

Jonathan Gray over last 8 starts: 0.58 ERA, 0.61 WHIP, 79 K/8 BB over 62 IP. #mlbdraft #Cubs #Astros
— Dan Kirby (@DanMKirby) April 28, 2013
 Here are his pitch counts this season: 2/16 vs. Hofstra: 66 pitches/number of strikes unknown 2/23 @ Texas A&M-Corpus Christi: 102/63 (61.8%) 3/2 vs. Pepperdine: 114/74 (64.9%) 3/9 @ UCLA: 110/72 (65.5%) 3/15 vs. Northwestern State: 111/84 (75.7%) 3/22 vs. TCU: 122/82 (67.2%) 3/28 vs. Kansas: 105/76 (72.4%) 4/5 @ Texas: 116/70 (60.3%) 4/12 @ Baylor: 118/75 (63.6%) 4/19 vs. New Orleans: 88/67 (76.1%) Jonathan Gray has thrown 1,162 pitches this season. 739 have been strikes, but the data from his first start is missing. His strike rate is probably around 65% this season.
