I just tried this place a friend recommended in Sealy, TX the other day called Hinze's BBQ while driving from Austin to Houston. I've tried a lot of the BBQ places in Houston (Luling City, Goode Company, etc.), and I think Hinze's has them all beat. Anyone else been there? If not, I highly recommend it. So what are y'alls favorite Texas BBQ joints?
I've never been there but I've heard good things about it. I have never been to a BBQ joint, especially a chain that I thought was great. I used to think Luthers (not a joint I know) was okay until earlier. I really do like the Goode Company and a place in Humble called Moe's. My favorite BBQ has always been cooked in a someone's backyard with the exception of mine because my BBQ sucks. I'm going to try again in a couple of weeks. There has been a few "joints" that I really like but I have no idea what the name was. They've mostly been places friends and I find out in the middle of nowhere on road trips. You know the places that are just a shack hooked up to big ass BBQ pit.
The Luther's thread has some good BBQ places in it.. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=97827
previous thread: Where is the absolute best BBQ in Houston? In Schulenberg, TX, there is a small place called 'city market' (family owned and operated for generations)... On Saturdays, before noon (and ONLY at this time) they sell freshly cooked brisket, whole chickens, and sausage. Their food is in a class by itself. I've had Goode Co., Otto's, Hickory Hollow... that's good stuff. But the BBQ from that place in Schulenberg (specifically, the brisket and chicken) leaves the others far behind.
If you are still learning....I stumbled across this great resource of information a few days back...got lots of great information that I have found to work well in making the kind of BBQ that will have your entire family beggin you to do the meat at every family function. http://www.cbbqa.com/faq/ as far as a great bbq place....I dont remember the name, but there is this place halfway between Houston and San Antonio that has really good BBQ...
my favorite in texas is blacks in lockhart - about 30 minutes southeast of austin. some of the best pork ribs ive had (literally melt off the bone - like butter). for me, its all about the sauce and blacks does that great too.
My news feed is shoving me a lot of articles on Texas BBQ joints closing weekly. Is the state of the restaurant and beef industry so bad? @Buck Turgidson
Not BBQ per say, but what is odd is 2 Panera Bread places closed, one by my work on 290 and Tidwell and one by my house on Louetta by Champion Forest.......thought that was super odd over the past month. They are so overpriced but they do have a good tuna sandwich
Looks like the franchisee company is in financial trouble. https://www.chron.com/food/article/panera-bread-closed-houston-texas-20811136.php
The franchisee had lost his franchise rights from Panera and was operating illegally. Ended up shutting down something like 17 locations. All of the ones in Montgomery County are gone.
I'm fine with a bump. I will say this. Killen's & Feges (which I really wanted to like) are just too salty. Way too salty. Pinkerton's, Khoi & that place in Spring are ones I like. Need to try Pit Room. Never been to Panera in my life.
It's singular. Truth BBQ. They are very good. The sides and desserts are great, too. I especially love the tatertot casserole. There was another, more recent thread on this subject. Texas BBQ
Nobody. I think Tex Mex itself is crazy overrated. I've lived in Houston going on 40 years and the Tex Mex addiction here is insane. Never understood it. Sometimes I feel everyone but me is under a spell.
Beef is expensive. If I buy tenderloin for me and the wife it is 27 dollars per lb in the market. But I usually go to Restaurant Depot. Don't know if you have down there. And I buy a whole tenderloin and break it down. Make nice 10 oz steaks and clean the Chain and use the tail for beef tips. I grew up on T Bone Tom's Chicken fried steak. So a crummy piece of meat if done correctly is as good as anything I would pay big bucks for. Smoking meat is a commitment and I respect those who do it and do it well. There used to be a place in Kemah called Herbies. He would smoke all of his stuff over night while making his sides. Then he had little trailers that looked like little log houses. Loaded em up and sent them to beaches, fishing piers and where the action was. I suspect he made a good deal with Fertitta when he bought everything that is now the boardwalk. Sorry I love food.
