He also likes flexibility in contracts with non guaranteed money and team/player options etc. I think this is key. Even the Finney Smith deal only has 2 years guaranteed money.
KPJ had a non guaranteed contract, something you might have missed. It was basically a 1 yr "prove it" deal that has low risk with high reward.
Every player is overpaid but people look at the money and go wow that is high..................TV rights have exploaded salaries
this is an astonishingly bad take. Mobley was the consensus 2 for everyone outside of Houston.half of Houston talked themselves into the potential of Jalen when the certainty of a multi time DPOY was on the table. To this day Mobley offensively is half of what he can be and defensively top 5 in the league with 15 years of play left. Jalen is still not high at anything and more importantly shows almost no improvement year over year.
No this is the bad take because its never just about Mobley vs Jalen. Is Mobley better than Jalen? Obviously yes. However there are levels to this including the fact that the Rockets were better off tanking than being in the playoffs the next 3 yrs. After the tank, Jalen along with DB served as the sacrifice for KD. Even if we had the perfect draft and ended up with Mobley, Cam Thomas, Garuba and Quentin Grimes how is that any better than KD, Sengun, Amen, Jabari, and Reed? Mobley right now is making 30% of the cap. Even if he is better than Jalen, Jalen making only 33M is a lot better than Mobley making 56M. Cavs have been disappointments 2 yrs in a row and thats cuz Mobley makes too much. It'll be funny to see him make even more next year and the Cavs have to get rid of even more players to afford him and DMitch.
so bascially picking Jalen is better because he was useful in a KD trade? this is so dumb. I am saying: 1) Jalen was the wrong choice at the time and 2) Jalen was obviously the wrong choice in hindsight. Having more value is always better than having less value and Mobleys is like 10x Jalens. you act like we wouldve been a playoff team with mobley instead of jalen. wrong. mobley was nothing on offense as a rook and we could have tanked just as easily. Everyone in the world was syaing take Mobley at 2. Stone went on a limb and was dead wrong. you dont get points for being that wrong. Phx passed on Luka and made the finals a few years later with Ayton. But Luka always was and always will be the right choice. they missed just like we missed except our miss is worse because Ayton a lot of ppl had Ayton at 1. also you said "Even if we had the perfect draft and ended up with Mobley, Cam Thomas, Garuba and Quentin Grimes how is that any better than KD, Sengun, Amen, Jabari, and Reed?" you cant attribute having all that to selecting Jalen. makes no sense. just bc things turned out well doesnt mean jalen pick was right. a couple ping pong balls dont go our way and Bari, Amen, Reed could EASILY be Ben Mathurin, Anthony Black, and Devin Carter. we got SO lucky. Stone doesnt get points for luck.
If the Rockets had somehow kept Mobley in the McGrady trade, I think they could have been contenders. I still remember that awful series against the Jazz where it was Yao, McGrady, and a bunch of bricklayers. Wasted so much time waiting for Luther F'n Head to blossom.
There's always Whats Ifs. Technically could have ended up w/ this lineup. Goon Mobley Tari J Williams Amen
You are totally confused we are living in reality, a reality where we picked Jalen and ended up with Sengun, Amen, KD etc The ping pong balls DID bounce our way so what kinda crap are you even saying now? Because in your hypothetical scenario we would have ended up with Devin Carter Stone doesnt deserve any credit? lol Stop confusing reality with fantasy. Maybe you forgot Stone hiring tank commanders like Daishen Nix and mandating he plays 30 mins a night. Rox having bad record is not due to luck, Stone ensured the tank job. How is Jalen the wrong choice in hindsight? We literally ended up with Sengun, Amen ans Jabari and you think thats wrong in hindsight? Bruh. Comparing it to Luka is dumb AF as Amen and Sengun are better than Mobley. What you are trying to argue is dumb AF. In a hypothetical world where we got Mobley what that proof the Rox would tank to get Amen and Jabari? Or we'd even trade for Sengun? There's just no proof of that at all. We might not make the playoffs but no way Rox get the worst record. Finally Mobley is not 10x Jalen, not with him making 30% of the cap. He is extremely overpaid thats why Cavs will never win anything. Mobley may be a defensive superstar but all defense guys like PJ Tucker and Trevor Ariza were never max players or even close to that. People pay for offense not defense. So in short picking Jalen is better than Mobley in hindsight, as Jalen being bad enabled the Rox to get Amen and Jabari and then later on Green was traded for KD who is also better than Mobley. If we got Mobley we wouldnt get top 4 picks, and we'd also have to pay him his super max deal so no KD either. This isnt Rocket science lol.
I think what he's trying to say is that Jalen Green was the right choice because he's so dogshit at basketball it caused the team to Tank to get better players that they couldn't have gotten if they picked someone who was actually good at basketball instead of Jalen Green.
Personally, I prefer Amen to anyone but Wemby over the last few years. And it is close for me with those two. If we had Mobley, Idk if we trade for Sengun. Overall I am happy and can’t wait for this season.
it was the beginning of the rebuild. so clean slate. I would think they would go for best instead of fit so they prolly trade for Sengun again after drafting Mobley at 2, Then they would have drafted grimes/cam thomas instead of JC
I would much prefer what the rockets have than Mobley Mitchell garland. The rockets will likely be good long long after the Cavs.
