I shocked with liquid chlorine on Thursday, then put 4 tabs in my chlorinator. All of my numbers are back in line now, including alkalinity and PH. Only thing high is the calcium hardness, but that's mostly my 20-year old surface. I'm going to replace it during the offseason.

I'm going to keep shocking once a week and keep my chlorinator full (instead of 1 tab at a time) and I think I'll be fine now. I also turned my return jets facing up more. I read that helps aerate the pool more than if they're pointing down or to the side.

    Thanks for all the tips!

BTW, has anyone ever replaced a pool light?

1 tab at a time? I generally had 3-4 during the summer and dial set on 3.

Yeah, done that, too. Wasn't fun.

Switch to salt water. Very easy to maintain including changing the cell when needed. My pool is set and forget unless it rains a lot. The. I check it.

with the salt cell my pool stays reliably at a low Cl concentration. Perfect clear smell free water and no eye burn or dry skin on the kids.

What pool questions do you have? Don’t really want to read the the thread. I can give you the links that I use to maintain the pool with baking soda, borax, and acid only. I turn the salt cell up after a heavy load of kids and the pool and it’s perfectly I. The morning again. Check your CYA if you’re burning through chlorine. Salt cell was the best decision ever because the salt is cheap, it stopped raining in Houston so the pool never runs out of salt, and chlorine is expensiv.

I built the pool with salt water. It’s just a control box and extra plumbing. Should be easy to install aftermarket.

I had our salt water pool built 5 years ago. Zero issues thus far, except for replacing the cell ($600) this year. That’s around the avg lifespan.

I was paying $ 165 per month for weekly service. But the guy often didn't show up for weeks and was generally unreliable and looked like he was a drug addict (I took over all the existing service providers (gardeners, pool guy, AC people, insect spray guys, etc. etc.) from the previous owner of the house, who passed away).

Previous guy would also sometimes just show up on weekends, I never knew when he would come or not.

Finally, after two years of being annoyed, and after once again he didn't show up for weeks, I sent him a message saying that we would have to end our relationship, to which I received a response that he was sorry about his lack of communication, but that he had just moved to Kentucky?! Kind of like breaking up with a girlfriend and then she breaks up with you instead haha.

Anyway, I asked in our neighborhood Facebook group and got lots of recommendations for new guys, hired the first guy who showed up - he promised to always come on the same day, seemed friendly, and he is already doing 10 other pools in the neighborhood. Brazilian dude, so we talked about soccer a lot on his first visit. $ 150/month. Hope he will do a good job.

In terms of all the stuff I use for the pool (and for the outdoor Jacuzzi):

For the last two years, I had a solar-powered Betta Skimmer...previous one was called Betta 2...I liked it, but it stopped working at some point. Bought the newer model, called Betta SE.

To measure alkalinity, chlorine, etc., I have a Sutro in the pool and a Waterguru Sense in the skimmer of the outdoor hot tub. But the Sutro doesn't seem to work properly anymore. Trying to figure that out right now.

As a pool cleaning device, the previous pool guy always insisted I had to keep this vacuum in the pool that was connected to the pump, and to permanently leave it in there. The hose always annoyed me when trying to swim though. So when the new pool guy arrived, I asked him if I really need it and he just took it out and stored it and said if you really want it again in the future, we can put it back in.

Instead, I bought an Aiper Seagull Pro to save some money (thought the combination of that for floor and walls plus the Betta for skimming should be good enough), but then I decided to order the Beatbot Aquasense Pro instead. Technically, that should also eliminate the need for the Betta, but oh well.

Looking forward to trying out the Beatbot.

Oh, I forgot one more thing I bought (because I can't help myself LMAO).

Our pool isn't that big and it's shaped in a weird "kidney form" or something, with steps on one side and very deep (maybe 12 ft) on the other side. So it's not good for laps. Somehow I got Instagram ads for this, and of course...bought it.

Definitely works, but not sure how much I will actually use it.

Our daughter is just joining the school's swim team (they have an olympic-size swimming pool at the school), so perhaps she will find it useful.

But of course, our country club also has a resort pool AND a lap pool, so this purchase was definitely rather unnecessary.

Just like the hot tub is also unnecessary here in Florida 80 % of the year...I have Rheem heat/cooling pumps for pool and hot tub, so I guess in theory I could use that to cool the hot tub down to 55 F in the summer...but I also have a Renutherapy ice bath, so that would seem like a waste of energy.

But it's nice to have all the options.

P.S.: Ah yes, I also use iAqualink, it works ok, but their user interface is so outdated...lol.

Wow! I hadn't seen a robotic pool cleaner that does the surface and pool. I also have a Betta but use a combination of wired Dolphin and cordless Degrii robotic pool cleaners. That Beatbot Aquasense Pro looks awesome! Let me know how you like it and how long it can clean on a single charge. Our pool is only 18K gallons so nothing compared to yours.

I'm not the guy with the huge pool, that's @LosPollosHermanos :). Ours is only about 14k gallons if I didn't miscalculate...

But it's outdoors under palm trees and an avocado tree and a mango tree and a bunch of other stuff around, so it does get some debris into it.

Will report back on how the Beatbot does the job.

As I often do, tried to look up who is behind the company, it's definitely Chinese...well, let's see.

I always felt Dana Wheeler-Nicholson should have had a more substantial career.

My pool has been perfect all winter long, but this Houston weather has been killing me. My backyard tends to flood when it rains really hard and fast, so every time I get it back in good shape, it rains again and I have to start the whole process over again. Last week a tree fell and it was in the pool for 3 days before I could get it cleaned up, so I've been shocking the hell out of it for 3 days now and it's finally looking good again.

It's expensive leaving that pump on overnight too!

I think my biggest problem are iguanas and sometimes ducks and sometimes possibly even raccoons pooping around and in the pool lol
