"Other top players" who just quit and drove home during a game last season (along other, non-publicized incidents) and put up sub-par numbers for most of the season (before putting up great stats in a meaningless stretch at the end of an already lost season) on the worst team in the league?

You guys are funny......he is a 21 year old kid - he got frustrated - no big deal - he left a game that he wasn't going to play in the 2nd half - and was frustrated. big ****ing deal....and he apologized, the org accepted it, so should everyone else.

Doing it at 21 is not a big deal, doing it at 28 would be.......plenty of players have struggled with mental health and been ok, once they matured.....you don't make snap decisions on 21 year olds...when they make a mistake you hold them accountable, you teach them - and you let them learn from their mistakes....

KPJ's transgression is a nothing burger....so he had 99% good and 1% bad, big whoop.

I'm more optimistic now, because of Alpi, JG, Tari, Bari.

KPJ can stay if he behaves and accepts a deal below 10 per that gives the team flexibility in case he goes bonkers again.

Otherwise, good luck getting a bigger deal elsewhere.

in its very best case scenario, this franchise is still years away from being a relevant playoff team. 0 reason to commit any type of long term money to someone like kpj. he's not the one they should be focused on

Thank god you are not in charge......

If they can get him for that, great, but I suspect it will be above that......and if they let the market set it...more than double that.

I would say 11-13 in a normal year, but upgraded a step up because inflation.

Not sure why extension other than it not being a distraction for a mental midget with risk of blowing up chemistry and one less trade asset.

Probably 4/48 or 5/60 with an option for last.

I personally think he’d take a friendly team extension, if he plays well maybe 14-15 per year.

Maybe he’ll get it but why do you think the “bag” is coming for Kevin?

Like we have to pay him now or we’ll regret it and Houston will have to pay him $23M+/year or some other team will.

The same fear about Christian Wood.
This has nothing to do with “Oh they made the wrong decision in trading him” or “They should have kept him and paid him” … no.

“OMG, he’s (Christian) gonna want, ask and get a max contract! If we don’t pay him, someone else will!” … We’ll have to see what Dallas or whoever pays him but the dude barely fetched a first round pick. (He’s eligible for a 4-year/$77M extension 6 months after the trade. That’s not max money. That’s less than Ryan Anderson got from the Rockets.)

A team friendly, a team option and/or non-guaranteed deal is one thing but…

Do I even want to be the team that pays Kevin Porter Jr.?

“The teams that find the Chandler Parsons Kevin Porter Jr., not the ones that pay them the max, are the ones that succeed long term.” — Daryl Morey

He’s had issues dating back to high school
    Issues at USC
    Issues at Cleveland
He was given away, traded for a 2024 top-55 protected 2nd round pick
    Issues at Houston

But teams are gonna be lining up to sign him and pay him?

“Where would KPJ go in the the 2021 draft?” … “Top 3! Top 5!”

So you're banking on his like Green and Smith holding the same grudge that certain fans hold about a single incident AND them devaluing the most talented player on the roster.....

    Lol good luck with that.

I agree with your post, but not quite 100%. Twerent a nada burger; but neither was it a world ender. It just was what it was and what it wasn’t was a lingering, festering ooze.

It may well have been a surprisingly good thing to have it addressed, then moved on from it.

    • He also brought more baggage than an airport during the holidays when he arrived in Houston. He left a trail of suspensions and other assorted disciplinary punishments for immaturity and insubordination from high school and college and at his first NBA stop, in Cleveland, where the Cavaliers were so anxious to dump this former first-round pick — drafted just the previous summer! — that they basically sent him to Houston in a limo.
    • Rainier Beach was ready to board a plane once for a big national tournament when Porter was tapped on the shoulder by Bethea and told to go home. Porter, the top player in the state by then, had run afoul of team rules. And there were a few other suspensions.
    • More incidents followed. Porter was suspended once at USC, where he only stayed a year. Because of the red flags, he fell to No. 30 in the 2019 draft. Then, after a promising rookie season with the Cavs, Porter was arrested after flipping his Mercedes in a late-night crash, made troublesome social media posts that were deleted and had multiple team violations. It all came to a head last January when he was told to clean out his locker following a screaming match with team officials. The Cavs placed him on leave while searching for trade partners; most took a hard pass.
    • Apparently, there was plenty of action, too, none of it much good for the Trojans. Porter had an undisclosed conduct issue, and Enfield felt he had no choice but to suspend the freshman. After the game, Enfield said that Porter’s suspension was indefinite and indicated that there was a chance Porter could have played his last game for the Trojans. “We’ll reevaluate his future with the program this week,” Enfield said. “It’s very disappointing. We need all our players to be healthy and available. The last thing you want to do as a head coach is suspend any of your players, but when there’s conduct issues, we have no choice.”
    • Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kevin Porter Jr. has been suspended one game without pay for improperly making contact with a game official, it was announced today by Kiki VanDeWeghe, Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations. The incident occurred at the conclusion of the third quarter of the Cavaliers’ 131-111 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Nov. 3 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

    • A Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office report reveals Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard Kevin Porter Jr. was arrested Sunday on weapons charges. A release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol said troopers responded to a rollover crash around 2:05 a.m. on I-76. They found a damaged 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE on the left side of the roadway upon arrival, the release said. Police said the driver, identified as 20-year-old Porter, was uninjured and talking to EMS when troopers got to the scene. The release said it was determined Porter drove fatigued. Impairment was not suspected. Suspected mar1juana and a loaded .45 caliber handgun were located in the vehicle amid the investigation, according to the release. Ohio State Highway Patrol arrested Porter on felony charges of improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle and misdemeanor possession of mar1juana along with failure to control. Porter was taken to Mahoning County Jail. Porter’s bond was set at $4,000, and reports show he’s been released. [IMG]
    • Cavaliers guard Kevin Porter Jr. is expected to be traded or released following an outburst Friday in the Cavs locker room, The Athletic has learned from several sources with direct knowledge of the events. Porter, 20, grew angry when he entered the locker room and realized the team gave his old locker to Taurean Prince, who was acquired in a blockbuster trade Wednesday. Sources said Porter, whose locker was moved to the wall where the younger, end-of-bench players reside, began yelling and at one point threw food. Sources said general manager Koby Altman came into the locker room and confronted Porter, and the player remained combative with his boss. The Cavs spent the weekend trying to trade him. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff heard the commotion in the locker room from his office and came in, shocked and disgusted by what he heard.
    • Porter felt disrespected that his locker was moved, but the team source says that the decision was based on NBA seniority and spacing to adhere to COVID-19 protocols. The source said that Altman tried to settle him down and hear him out; however, Porter had none of it and "pushed Koby past his breaking point." The argument kept escalating and Porter was heard yelling about "modern-day slavery." Porter had grown frustrated recently because the team had been holding him out. He has yet to play in a game this season. "He snapped on Koby, and Koby snapped back," the source told BasketballNews.com. "Ultimately, I think Koby being unable to calm him was the last straw that broke the camel's back."
    • Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kevin Porter Jr. is alleged to have punched a woman in the face during an altercation that took place in downtown Cleveland in August, a police report obtained by 3News shows. The incident is alleged to have taken place at the Stone Block apartment building on W. Lakeside Avenue and W. 6th Street in Cleveland's Warehouse District just after midnight on Aug. 16. Porter has not yet been charged in the matter. According to a police report from the Cleveland Police, a 26-year-old woman and 19-year-old woman said they were leaving an apartment unit when Porter and his sister, who is not named in the report, approached them. As Porter's sister and the 26-year-old exchanged words, Porter's sister allegedly swung and punched the 26-year-old in the face. At the same time, Porter is alleged to have thrown a drink in the face of the 19-year-old before ripping her wig off and punching her in the left side of her face, which caused slight swelling that was visible at the time the police report was taken. Another unidentified suspect, described as a "black male with dreads," then stepped into the fight and began throwing the 19-year-old around.
    • Cleveland Cavs player Kevin Porter Jr. allegedly punched a woman in the face and ripped off her wig during an altercation back in August ... but Porter's attorney says the claim is bogus. The allegations are spelled out in police reports obtained by TMZ Sports ... which detail an August 16 incident involving Porter, his sister and two other women. The 2 alleged victims told police things popped off when "words were exchanged" at an apartment complex in Downtown Cleveland ... and things escalated from there. One of the alleged victims told cops Porter's sister struck first -- punching one of the women in the face. That's when, the women say, Kevin jumped in ... "At this time, Mr. Porter threw his drink in the face of [an alleged victim] and then ripped the wig off her head and then punched her in the left side of her face causing slight swelling visible at the time of this report," the police report says. Cops say they spoke with a witness who saw the whole incident and backed up the two women ... claiming the Porters were the aggressors. In fact, the witness says she saw Kevin Porter with one of the women's "weave in his hand when he then punched [one of the women] in the face causing her to [fall] into the refrigerator." When cops arrived, they noted both of the women who allegedly fought with the Porters had visible injuries. The woman who was allegedly struck by the NBA player had a swollen left cheek, cops say. The other woman had a broken fingernail and a small lump on her forehead. Both women opted to NOT receive medical treatment at the time of the incident. Cops say they told the two women to contact the city prosecutor's office if they wanted to press charges. So far, neither Porter nor his sister have been charged with a crime. Porter's attorney, Alex Spiro, issued a statement adamantly denying the allegations -- saying, "There is no truth to this allegation which is why the allegation has led nowhere." Three witnesses corroborated the two victims' stories. Porter left the scene in a black SUV before contact could be made. Police advised the two victims to follow up with the prosecutor.

    • Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. will miss time because of a violation of the NBA's health and safety protocols stemming from visiting a Miami strip club with teammate Sterling Brown that resulted in Brown being assaulted, sources told ESPN.
    • Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. has been fined $50,000 for violating the league's Health and Safety Protocols, which among other things prohibit attending indoor social gatherings of 15 or more people or entering bars, lounges, clubs or similar establishments, it was announced today by Byron Spruell, League Operations. Porter Jr. violated these rules when he attended a club in Miami on April 19.
    • PORTER RODE THE second bus to shootaround on the morning of Houston's 123-111 loss to the Phoenix Suns, which followed the Rockets' first full day off in about a month. Lucas requires Green to participate in the early sessions on game days. They are optional for Porter, whose attendance has been sporadic. "It's his third year, and I've got to respect that," Lucas says. "I'm waiting for him to come willingly." Lucas compares his approach to Porter's development to "kid gloves," saying he gauges Porter's mood before determining how hard to push him that day. Lucas worries that Porter will tune him out if he demands too much. "The biggest thing is getting to learn and know him without smothering him," says Lucas, whose one firm rule for Porter is, "Don't ever let me catch you lying to me."
    • Houston Rockets point guard Kevin Porter Jr. lost his temper during a heated halftime discussion and didn't return to the court, leaving the Toyota Center during the second half of Saturday's 124-111 loss to the Denver Nuggets, sources told ESPN. Porter became upset after assistant coach John Lucas challenged him, revisiting an issue that led to Porter losing his composure on the bench during the first half, sources said.
    • Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. left the stadium during halftime of Saturday night's home game against the Denver Nuggets after a heated exchange in the locker room with Houston assistant coach John Lucas, sources tell The Athletic. The Rockets went on to lose 124-111. Sources said Lucas called out multiple players, including Porter and Christian Wood — who was benched after missing a mandatory COVID-19 testing window — during halftime, focusing on Porter’s play and Wood's effort level. As things escalated, Porter threw an object, needed to be separated from Lucas and then got in his car and left the arena. Wood refused to sub into the game in the second half, sources added.

I'm not arguing to cut him, I'm arguing to not overpay him before he proves he can even go a full season without an incident

If he has a great season this year with no incidents then he earned his contract and I'm fine paying him. As it stands now, we should only take a very team friendly deal.

Not paying him right now doesn't mean we're letting him go

None of that sense he got to Houston at 19 is all that bad, go look up Gerald Green and his entourage he was cut by the Rockets for showing up high as a kite in the Hotel with his buddies, but he turned it around.

Many of these kids that grew up without fathers, and a lack of discipline struggle against things until they mature - that is KPJ - he raged against the machine as a kid, and is now starting to understand that he is better off in the system of the NBA than without, and has settled down considerably.

Thank god none of us here ever committed a transgression, would hate for us to be tossing stones around our glass houses.

At what point do all you ANGELS forgive him for being young and stupid, or will you just keep on bringing up the same tired stuff over and over, even though it has become less and less over time - look at Cleveland vs Houston as an example......and ours is what over 2+ years?

I’d like 3/48 with team option

16mil is a respectable number for someone who was honestly a middle of the pack point guard

If he can show he is borderline all star, and be trustworthy maturity wise, by the end of the second year, I say then you extend him to the 20-30per range

Gearld Green never ever got a significant extended multi year deal in his career. Hes a career journeyman which is old news. played for tiny deals year after year scrapping to hang on. what a irrelevant reference there about "turned it around"

Some of these numbers being thrown around are absolutely laughable. But no surprise the usuals on cf's are as clueless as they come

Allen Iverson spent time in jail, Charles Barkley threw a guy through a plate glass window, Hakeem used to slap teamates, and faked an injury for a contract.

There are plenty of guys that turned it around, and plenty who didn't but when you have KPJ's talent level you need to take the time to see.
