Talented writer, not a great rapper. He's 16 though so who knows. He's going to be famous regardless, youtube loves him.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the biggest rap fan but I'm really curious to know why you think he isn't a great rapper?

IMO hip hop is mostly about distinctive and recognizable (not necessarily skilled) voice, how annunciation flows and ability to deliver big-balls lines powerfully. This kid has great flow but falls very short in the other two areas I think. But like I said he's 16 and rappers constantly adjust their tonality and style in the early stages of their development. Many of our favorites did not sound the same at 16 as they do at 25.

The idea is to search for the sound that meets the truth of your story, the audience detects it subconsciously. This is why Drake is so succesful, because he doesn't overdramatize or exaggerate the difficulty of his upbringing nor does he act like he would kill anyone or beat the hell out of them. He focuses on his insecurities and his first world problems, which while not profound, people believe he is generally telling the truth about his life.

If we're talking about hip hop, the actual words don't even matter. When Future and Desiigner 'rap' you can barely understand what they're saying but it's ok, they are still very well liked. With RAP rap it actually matters what you're saying and imo it is more about new age poetry and less about vanity than hip hop. Few people masterfully transcend the boundary, Kendrick Lamar being the best example of someone who has ascended to an art form that can't be forced into a genre.

I'm a big fan but also wouldn't call myself any sort of expert. Just sharing my experience of the genres.

I'd say average to below average rapper. Eminem isn't even the best white rapper rapping these days so why would you compare him to eminem? But, i was also disappointed this didn't have a 16 year old panda doing something so that might have skewed my perspective.
