So a bunch of guys I'm in a fb group with are arguing about players who could possibly go into the hall of fame. Typical talks of T Mac, Vinsanity, Nash. But then it got interesting. Players like Horry, Billups, and Nash were brought up. Also, apparently Iverson is a sure fire hall of famer to them. So then I started looking up who's in the hall of fame, and tried making arguments on who should and shouldn't be in. So essentially, I'll name a few players, you all say yay or nay for HOF. If you have nominees, please bring them up and ask yay or nay! Nominees: T-Mac Vinsanity AI Nash Horry Billups Ben Wallace Rasheed Wallace C-Webb Jermaine O'Neal Amare Stoudemire Joe Johnson Chris Paul Rondo LMA Grant Hill I figured some were not mentioning because they'll get in for other reasons besides their NBA careers such as: Yao Manu Pau Gasol Tony Parker
no to both wallace's no rondo no horry no joe johnson LMA is up in the air at the moment. his stats will not probably be good enough to get in by themselves unless he wins at least one championship. yes to everyone else. tmac is right on the edge though. too bad he couldnt play at least 3-4 more years and pad his stats a bit more.
You think JO, Grant Hill and Amare are HOF worthy?? Everyone else I agree with, except I think Ben Wallace gets in.
T-Mac- yay Vinsanity -yay AI -yay Nash-yay Horry-yay Billups - nah Ben Wallace-nah Rasheed Wallace- nah C-Webb- yay Jermaine O'Neal - nah Amare Stoudemire - nah Joe Johnson- nah Chris Paul - yay Rondo - nah LMA- maybe Grant Hill - yay
Yays in bold. Nays not in bold. T-Mac Vinsanity AI Nash Horry Billups Ben Wallace Rasheed Wallace C-Webb Jermaine O'Neal Amare Stoudemire Joe Johnson Chris Paul Rondo LMA Grant Hill Yao Manu Pau Gasol Tony Parker
Rememeber the actual hall of fame is a Baskeball hall of fame and not a NBA hall of fame. So Yao, manu, Tony Parker, pau are shoe ins. I'd love to hear AI give a hall of fame speech. Unintentionally comedy potential.
I can't even take the basketball Hall of fame seriously until Rudy T is a member. A college All-American, second overall pick in NBA draft, five time NBA all-star, sustains near fatal injury on basketball court, returns from near fatal injury, wins two championships as coach, coaches USA to gold medal in Olympics. I mean, what more do they want?
Hall of Fame Probability for all listed players from basketball-reference: T-Mac - 0.9555 Vinsanity - 0.9455 AI - 0.9998 Nash - 0.9829 Horry - 0.0385 Billups - 0.8440 Ben Wallace - 0.4533 Rasheed Wallace - 0.0857 C-Webb - 0.1462 Jermaine O'Neal - 0.3180 Amare Stoudemire - 0.7293 Joe Johnson - 0.5056 Chris Paul - 0.9997 Rondo - 0.4107 LMA - 0.0458 Grant Hill - 0.8911 Yao - 0.5259 Manu - 0.2005 Pau Gasol - 0.8086 Tony Parker - 0.9386 Guys that are still relatively young like LMA are underrated by this, as it is largely based on counting stats, but for the retired or nearly retired it is probably pretty accurate (with the exception of the international players, because I don't think it considers international play).
I separated them into plausible and implausible candidates. The implausible candidates obviously carry an implicit no. Also, I tossed in Stephon Marbury, even though he's a no for me, because he's better than some of these candidates. Plausible Tracy McGrady : Yay Vince Carter : Yay Allen Iverson : Nay Steve Nash : Yay Chauncey Billups : Nay Ben Wallace : Nay Rasheed Wallace : Nay Chris Webb : Yay Chris Paul : Yay Rajon Rondo : Nay Grant Hill : Nay Stephon Marbury : Nay Implausible Robert Horry LaMarcus Aldridge (at this point, barring a gigantic increase in performance) Jermaine O'Neal Amare Stoudemire Joe Johnson
I think Iverson, Nash, Chris Paul, and Vince Carter are automatic. I think Grant Hill (7x all-star, collegiate career), Ben Wallace (4x DPOY, 4x all-star, championship), and Billups (5x all-star, finals mvp) all deserve to get in. McGrady (7x all-star, MIP) and Webber (5x all-star, ROY, collegiate career) will probably get in, but that would be b/c of low HOF entry standards. At this point, I don't see a case for any of the others.
Yay Chris Paul Vinsanity Nash C-Webb Parker Ginobilli Gasol Yao (contributor, not as a player) Iverson He will get in without question, but if I had my way he wouldn't. Most overrated player in history, and a cancer to the sport as a whole. He was the dribble happy, act like an idiot idol for an entire generation of dribble happy, act like an idiot players. Nay T-Mac Horry Billups (Close) Ben Wallace (Close) Rasheed Wallace Jermaine O'Neal (Close) Amare Stoudemire Joe Johnson Rondo LMA (Not yet, could get in with some hardware in SA) Grant Hill
How about Tyler Hansbrough? He didn't amount to much in NBA, but his collegiate career is pretty amazing. NCAA champion, all-time ACC scoring leader, National college player of the year (2008), 3× Consensus first-team All-American (2007–2009).
A player's collegiate career factors into his HOF consideration. So if his nba career was borderline HOF caliber, a strong collegiate career could put him over the top.
