Anybody know what Yao Ming's religion is? Just thought I would throw this question out there since we can talk everything about the Houston Rockets in here... I happened to be reading through this, and then I thought about Yao Ming... http://www.frommers.com/destinations/beijing/0201020893.html
You can't ask that! It's not politically correct. Why don't you start a poll and see who's a Democrat and who's a Repulican on the team too?
Most modern urban Chinese are not "religious" in the American sense... vast, vast majority do not belong to any organized religion, and would not claim a religion. That said, most families have pseudo-religious traditions that tie into Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. But I stress the "pseudo" aspect, since religious practice is pretty rare. It's unlikely that Yao would formally worship his ancestors (as they still do in most traditional Chinese societies, including Taiwan/HK), but he might sweep his grandparents' graves annually, burn incense occasionally, etc. He might bow to a Buddha when he walks through a temple (as a tourist!), but that's probably the extent of it.
Yup, my parent aren't really religious either. They mostly stress this concept of luck, and burn incense sometimes.
That's what I want to say, but you said it for me, thank you! As he pointed out, most Chinese don't really know what their religion is, they rarely go to the temple(not just temple for budda, but many others, like GuangYing, and many historical God figure), but if they go, they will do some traditional things like pray and burn incense occasionally, and so on, but can't say it better than that.
In case anybody doesn't know what this ridiculously long word means... Properly, opposition to the disestablishment of the Church of England, but popularly cited as an example of a long word.
