Without one big expiring contract, you're forced to throw in multiple players to match salaries, instantly making the deal more complicated.

Atlanta wants nothing to do with Scola when they have Horford at the 4 and Pachulia at the 5. The only reason you see Smith at the 4 and Horford at the 5 so often is because Marvin Williams needs to squeeze in minutes at the 3.

Folks need to get into a better habit of consider what the other team wants, instead of considering the best possible win-win deal for Houston. All trades carry some sting.

What Atlanta would want the most would be a Chris Paul or Deron Williams - ironically, the guys they passed on to draft Marvin Williams. If they can't get that, it would be a stud wing (Joe Johnson can slide to the 3 if need be) or a stud center. I wouldn't be surprised if they're trying to get out of Johnson's albatross contract either.

Also note that the Hawks only have 7 guys under contract (including Smith)...so loading up on several young low priced guys probably would be interesting to them.

We obviously do not have a center.

If you're determined to move Scola, Lowry would probably have to go with him.

Moving Martin and Chase would be acceptable if the Hawks are good with Johnson and Martin playing together

In any scenario, the Hawks probably would be interested in all the draft picks they could get their hands on, and probably would want Chase, Lee, Patterson, and Hill for depth. I'm not saying that to indicate we need to or should give them those things....but they will be asking for them.

Not as difficult in the offseason, especially when dealing with a team that has 8 vacant roster spots. And it's always easier to turn around and sell off smaller individual deals than one massive one.

Josh Smith would be a great addition. He brings the athletism that we have been lacking in our rotation.

If we can make some move to get Josh Smith without giving up Lowry, Martin, or Patterson, you make the move. If you have to give up both 1st rounders this year, I think you go for it.

I also think adding Sam Dalembert would be an excellent move. The guy can consistently put up 8+ppg, 10+rpg, and 2+bpg. If you roll out a starting five of:
    Dalembert
    Patterson
    Smith
    Martin
    Lowry

...your defense is instantly a top 7-8 defensive team in the NBA.

This wont be a championship contender right away, but it will be a Playoff contender and a step in the right direction for possible sign-n-trade deals come 2012...possibly package any of those players to bring in Dwight and CP3??

    Fair point.

Regarding your previous post, I think it's obvious the Rockets won't move Martin for JSmith when we have Scola/Patterson. This might be a case of the player wanting to come here, but the two teams not being a good fit trade wise.

If you trade for Josh Smith, you better be sending out Scola or moving him to a third team. Smith can't be your full-time SF, despite what some people think.

I've forgotten what a blocked shot looks like. Can we please get him now? Him or Tristan Thompson. For finesse, we have PitPat.

You still have a 6'6 center, no one who consistently close in the 4th, and nobody who can create their own shot. Yet championship caliber starting lineup.

    Put down the kool-aid man.

    Not a fan.

Here's a Hawks fan's opinion on Josh Smith, which I from an observing standpoint very much agree with.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading he wants to be traded to play more PF and less SF.

Unless the Rockets are thinking of getting rid of PatPat & Scola, a trade for Smith makes little sense.

Plus while Smith is very good help defender, he is not a very good one-on-one defender. Hayes while good would still be playing somewhat out of position at the C.

How? Useless parts only done to fill salaries simply get cut.

If you don't believe me, just go back and look at past deals.

For a board that is suddenly enamored with Josh Smith, it would benefit all of you to stop considering scenarios that involve him playing as a SF.

When smith played the three for Atlanta, he was awful. God awful. It was not until he was moved to the PF that he started showing us the electrifying dunks and improved offensive efficiency you believe you are trading for in a SF.

The Rockets woul probably be better served stretching Patterson to the SF.

We watched the wrong game seven. I remember Bynum and Gasol grabbing rebound after rebound after the rox played great initial defense. How about chuck hayes at the four, Asik(for lee) at the 5. Luis scola and Ppat coming off the bench.

    1.Lowry/dragic/lull=30 points a game
    2. Kmart/Dragic/Squid=23.1 ppg
    3.Josh Smith/Bud=28 ppg
    4.Hayes/Ppat=13 ppg
    5.Asik/Scola=17 ppg

They'll average around 109-111 pts a game and hold the other team to 90 points.:p
The Heat lose to us in seven games. Wade goes for 30 pts a game on martin but Martin drops 28 on him for the whole series. We win every other match up because someone sleeps with a James' family member.

If Josh Smith matures, I would definitely try to get him. The guy is still so dumb at times that he still shoots a jumper when his own home crowd groans/moans everytime he does it. The problem with Smith has always been basketball IQ; there is no denying his talent.

He would improve our team if he learns how to play to his strengths; if he doesn't, it could really backfire on any team he goes to.

He easily could have been an all-star if he learns to improve his strengths, and minimize his weaknesses, but that hasn't happened yet. And I don't know if it will ever happen.

The only way I see this happening is if it's a 3-way that sends Scola to another team. There is absolutely no room for Scola, Smith, Patterson, and contrary to what this board seems to believe, I think Smith playing extended time at the 3 would inhibit our offense.

I'd love to have his shotblocking, and I think he could be an all-nba defender if he's controlled and focused. He could be a guy that takes that Zach Randolph leap, except his would be more on the defensive end. Sort of like a taller Ron Artest in his prime.

My only reservation with trading Scola is that it leaves us without a post player (other than relying on Pat to develop).

Considering the decline of the center position, you could have scola coming off the bench and still giving you 12 points a game from the high/low post. Scola can score on anyone not named Dwight Howard.

    1. I think it's good to hear Smith is interested in Houston, no matter whether Houston has interest in Smith and whether he is a good fit. It's good to hear a (relatively) high-profile guy has interest in your team.

    2. Of course Josh Smith has significant flaws. If he didn't, the Hawks wouldn't be thinking about trading him. If you can get him at the right price, you do it, especially if you can take advantage of ATL's desire to get salary relief.

    3. On the other hand, he's not enough of an elite player for you to overpay in a trade or even to offer equal/similar level of talent in a trade. The point of a Smith trade is to increase your talent level, not to end up with the same talent level.

    4. So, he's pals with Dwight Howard, aye? Courtney Lee is also pals with Dwight... I'm just saying.
