And yet they had their best years with a QB who they acquired via trade (and the year they had the best defense they've ever had, Mario was injured)... I agree teams should only take QB's they truly believe can succeed in this league (rather than taking a flyer on projects like Manziel who may or may not pan out). You're basically proving my point... that QB's who bust lead to organizational-wide changes and basically set back franchises by 3-5 years... whereas a D-lineman who busts (or one who never dominates enough to get a 2nd contract with the team who drafted him) doesn't usually cause that sort of upheaval.
it's all about risk mitigation, but at some point you have to roll the dice. if a gm is making decisions based on his job status 3-5 years from now... he's clearly not the man for the job.
Roll the dice? Sure. You roll the dice and reach for a QB, you pretty much not only guarantee your imminent exit, but you may never get another HC or GM job in this league. Also, on the Texans... a GM hasn't been making the decisions since Casserly. Clearly the QB guru coaches felt that they would rather not spend a high draft pick on a QB that they feel wasn't worth it.
Not true at all. The Niners "rolled the dice" by trading 3 picks to Denver for the #36 overall pick to obtain Colin Kaepernick. It's always a gamble, but you have to be in it to win it.
Sure, because they had a new coach who wanted him that badly.... didn't feel he was reaching...and that being said, they may not end up really being better off had they just kept and re-signed Smith who they spent a #1 pick on. If you have a coaching staff that is indifferent or just doesn't like any of these guys that much, you really want them to "roll the dice" to get a QB just to get one?
What best years...??? Schaub had one playoff year and then lead us straight to the #1 pick in the draft. That is nothing to pop bottles or start a parade over.
You do know Kaepernick got them to the super bowl right...??? First you're telling us Buffalo's future plans and now you're trying to say what Harbaugh would have been better off doing... Lol...
??? They're a possible Super Bowl team in 2011 if not for the Schaub injury... they're a likely playoff team in 2010 if not for an incompetent defensive coordinator. There are quite a few "franchise" first round drafted QB'S currently playing that haven't even had that much of a stretch.... but honestly discussing him right now is pointless and adds nothing to the discussion.
Alex Smith got them to an NFC championship OT game a year after he was declared a "bust" to the point that Harbaugh already groomed his replacement. Who know what happens to Kap once the Harbaugh era ends there... and its interesting to note that he's been more "effective" as a QB when he's played more like Alex Smith and less like Mike Vick. As far as telling you Buffalo's future plans... all I said was they're not going to compound one mistake (Manuel) into another 1st round QB mistake. And they've got Orton on the books for decent money.
I'm pretty sure Yates did at least as good as what Schaub would have done. Schaub under the bright lights was not a pretty sight.
Yates was OK because the system was as QB friendly as their was... if things were clicking, you pretty much had the read made at the line. With Schaub in there, those reads become even more apparent simply based on experience. At no point will any Kubiak offense require the QB to be super-human... and Flacco is continuing that trend this year.
You're making a shoulda coulda woulda argument... And you brought him up... Who cares... Point is they made it to the super bowl and he was a huge part of them getting there.
I started this thread and am a proponent of Watt for Luck, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Brees is debatable, but Brady and Rivers are better. Would say Luck is the 6th best QB after Brady, Manning, Rodgers, Rivers and Brees
Yep. Who doesn't think Luck with Belichick would be at least as good as Brady is now? Brees is nothing special at this point either. Rivers sucked until a coaching change last year.
