Would you take on Joe Johnson's bad contract if we got Smith as well?

Absolutely not. Johnson's contract is ghastly, and Josh has an attitude instead of playing with one. We kill ourselves capwise with guys that aren't going to win anything.

And Johnson sucks..k-mart can score more then him sadly while he's injured. Joe johnson just has good games here and there but only score low double digits.

Joe Johnson gives 4 times the defense and passing and playoff success that Kevin Martin does. And Joe Johnson isnt a prime playoff performer, which is to say....

Would it be a position upgrade? Yes. But NO would NOT take on Joe Johnson's contract

Joe Johnson is nice. But not quite the guy you build AROUND. Which is exactly what his contract means.

Taking on Joe Johnson you'd need a Deron Williams type to come with it like, not Josh Smith.

    No!

I bet we could get Smith for Martin's expiring and Patterson without having to take on Johnson's deal.

Well, DHoward, KD and the like as well. Just not second tier players, they have to be superstars.

    I hope so.

I would be all for Johnson + Horford but I doubt Atlanta wants to go there... unless we package Lowry which I'm not sure is worth it.

Wait why would having Jsmith and Johnson make us contend in the WCF if the Hawks have them already and haven't contended for the ECF?

    WHAT A CLOWN

How can Josh Smith be on a BAD contract, when you consider his production and age.

SMH, with fans like these, we dont deserve a superstar

Can not see Morey taking on a bad contract for more than a year unless the 2nd year has a team option on it.

Hmm. How terrible is Joe Johnson's contract really? On the one hand, he is only a 17-18 PER player, on the other hand, that does underrate him significantly because of his defense. Also, SG is a talent-scarce position in the NBA right now; the only superstars at the position are Kobe and Wade, and the top 5 probably looks like this (in no particular order)

    Kobe
    Wade
    Ginobili
    Harden
    Johnson

Is he worth the max, no... is it a bad contract, definitely. On the other hand how much is he actually worth? If he's worth $14M per year then that means you need to get $5M of surplus value back with him for him to be worthwhile. Is that fair?

Horford probably has more than $5M surplus value, Smith has less. Is there a compromise between the two? Maybe Atlanta would trade Johnson + Horford for Martin + some other asset--draft pick or something?

You do realize his contract is actually 18 million this year and goes up to $24 million in his last year?

With a salary cap of $58 million, no way in hell.

    Joe Johnson
    $18,038,573
    $19,752,645
    $21,466,718
    $23,180,790
    $24,894,863

This is how it will work, we get Johnson/Smith, we are definitely flipping one or the other into a 2nd trade, or we are finding a 3rd team to send in Their all-star, but either way, a trade like that, with Morey, would never be that simple.

Damn, yeah, it does go up a lot. Of course the salary cap could go up as well, due to inflation.
