Well, yeah, I can see how that could be an issue. Eff it. He was great in 2009, so let's go after him.
jesus. show me which of these tweets prove that other teams are dumb enough to sign him solely based on this "PR leak", like you implied that they would, which is what I said was bizarre. actually, don't. i have a better response:
I implied no such thing. First off, I don't think anything's going to happen solely based on one thing. As for the entire, broader strategy, I also don't know if it's going to at all improve his marketability to other teams. I'm just confident that that's the goal of the Manning camp with their actions this week (see Silva tweet).
I'd hold off on that eff it if I were you. Peyton still can't raise his throwing arm over his head. Last time I looked, that's an essential skill every quarterback needs to possess. The advantage here goes to Matt Schaub who, I believe, is still capable of throwing a football. I think Cat is on target here - Peyton is done in Indianapolis; The Colts are looking for a medical reason cut him; The "announcement" this week was nothing more than PR from the Manning camp; The Colts will draft Andrew Luck and start their rebuilding process and Peyton doesn't figure in this scenario; Finally, the Texans simply cannot afford both Schaub & Manning so Schaub would have to go leaving the fate of your 2012 season in the hands of a guy with an undetermined medical future. Let's say the Texans do just that and Manning cannot perform like the Manning of old. The same folks here in favor of this gamble would literally crucify the Texans for making such a "dumb ass" decision.
Exactly. The problem with any team signing Manning is that he's going to want to sign in early March (like any hot free agent), but you won't know whether he can perform until July or so. And if you sign Peyton Manning, you're burning the bridge if you have an established QB (Schaub). You can't go back. It'd be one thing if Manning were willing to wait to sign until June or July, when he could put on a full physical demonstration... but I don't think that's the case. Ultimately, I think he signs with Miami or Washington next month - two teams with everything to gain and little to lose if it ends up not working out.
IN MY OPINION, him wanting to sign as quickly as possible would mean that he cares not about the team, only the money. Optimistically, he has 3-5 years left in his career. I think going to a team he can win a super bowl with will be far and away his #1 priority, and the money won't be much, if at all, different no matter where he signs, assuming he's healthy enough to do so. I know the Redskins and Dolphins are the 2 teams everybody is speculating. I say there's almost no chance of either. At the beginning of this season, I thought the Texans would be the best fit for him, and the Jets and Ravens would be the most likely places he would play in 2012. I think Flacco did just enough to stave him off. I think the Jets are still the most likely candidate. They made a mess of themselves, but adding Peyton and Wayne could right the ship quickly. The other prime candidate is the 9ers. Alex Smith is a free agent, and I think there can be no other reason that they have yet to re-up with him after his best year ever than that they are waiting to see how Peyton's health and offseason develops. so i think it's jets or 9ers, while still holding out a glimmer of hope that the texans smarten up and make a play for him.
This. Washington and Miami are not ready to contend right now, and Peyton doesn't have time to hope they get better. Does he want to bounce around like Favre? Texans are a perfect fit. Great play action offense, great defense, star receiver, good O-line to protect an immobile QB. Not to mention a weak division and he gets to go against Luck twice. Plus we could get at least a 1st round pick for Schaub. That's a great asset considering how well we draft. But we can't risk signing Manning without his arm back to full strength. To me that's a relatively easy thing to observe. If you can see him throw at a high level before signing, the risk is probably worth it.
Bingo. His neck is supposedly healed. If he demonstrates the ability to throw like before then its a no brainer. You make an offer and dump Shaub and likely Mario. Healthy Manning > Shaub + Mario on this team.

Noting this only for general understanding - cap hits are determined by the maximum amount a contract could pay out in a year. Incentives and non-guaranteed portions may greatly reduce the actual payout, but not the cap figure.
Structure the contract such that you pay him 1mill for next year. If he hits certain incentives then it triggers bonus next year that are spread out through x year. You would be screwing yourself for tomorrow, but only if he plays, and if he does who cares 3 or 4 years from now.
just noticed that for all the flaming i've taken in this thread, the actual poll is 2/3 "yes". guess most people on here are wiser than me, and understand that there's no pleading your case necessary to argue manning over schaub.
now that Eli has more rings, Peyton will be looking for the surest thing to match him I predict he will reach out to the Texans
how many of you think the Texans would have made it to at least the AFC championship had Matt Schaub played? And think we would have a good chance at making the Super Bowl? I think the majority of us do. I clearly recall even a few Schaub haters stating the Texans would be Super Bowl contenders, despite how they feel Schaub ranks among the elite. Will a Peyton Manning guarantee the Texans a much better result? no one can say. as great as Manning is, his post season play hasn't been all that spectacular. even Eli, who's hasn't been to the playoffs as often, has made more out chances. and Peyton's performances have been while he was fully healthy.
That's ONLY because the Colts have been consistently terrible outside of Peyton Manning's play. He's one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
