Would you extend McHale's contract and give him additional powers if this helps you land Kevin Love?

Wojnarowski reported that Love has a strong bond with McHale and this bond may be why he has interest in Houston. cyberx said that Love is not all that impressed with Harden's defense and effort and how Dwight handled his exits from prior locations.

If Kevin McHale is an important factor in Love's decision, having him only under contract for one more year would be a detriment to Houston's chances as it would be easy for the team to fire him at any time. It's how fickle a coach's life is in the NBA. And we know that Kevin Love gets sad when Kevin McHale leaves him.

As such, shouldn't the Rockets lock up McHale's presence for many more years at an increased salary and give him additional powers such as making him the President of Basketball Operations supervising Morey in order to assure Kevin Love that his dear mentor is here to stay?

Nope. I would pursue Melo/Rondo in that situation.

Love won't stay here for a second if he doesn't like Howard and Harden, even if McHale were to get an extension. I don't like Harden's lack of effort on the defensive end, but Kevin Love is a poor defender too. McHale wouldn't be able get the job done, whether Love comes here or not.

I do not believe that McHale's presence here will figure into Love's calculus at all. That's more like a nice-to-have. Imagine you have a half-dozen job offers, all offering similar money. One of them has an old boss of yours that you liked. But the jobs also differ by what city you live in, how much professional success you might have, other potential coworkers that you know and may or may not get along with. How important is that boss?

Love has to think about his endorsement opportunities. He has to think about his opportunities to contend. He has to think about how he fits in with the other stars -- will he get as many touches as he wants playing next to another All-Star big man? Maybe he got on well with McHale, but he get on well with other coaches too. He's not worried about that.

What if we give him a "VP of Basketball Operations" title, give him a raise and just make him serve as our recruiter. Then we get a new coach and we got Milk Hair to recruit for us and he gets a raise. Everyone wins!

    Poll choices:

"I would do anything for Love..."
    "...but I won't do that."
