This thread is a pretty accurate costume if we wanted to parade ourselves as the cultural state of the nation. Definitely would compete for "worst."
So, in your opinion is it ever OK for a white person to use makeup to go in costume as a black person? Again, I am NOT talking about the old Al Jolson blackface.
Honestly. Rarely. It is seriously offensive. I am ON THE RECORD of being ok with RDJ's Tropic Thunder I am also on RECORD AS BEING INCREDIBLE SKEPTICAL of it when I heard about it. Very Few people can walk the line . . . .. in that movie it was mostly about the insanity of blackface Like I said it happens every year then there will be some frat party with it etc etc FOR THE RECORD I detested White Chicks as all people with any sense of any kind of class did. Stopped watching Marlon and Shawn movies PERIOD for a long time because of it . . . .. IMO I find BLACK FACE as wrong as a kid in and ISIS uniform mimicking a beheading .. .. they both are wrong People do stupidly offensive isht and try to hide behind 'comedy' Would there ever be a good time or moment to have two people dress up like exploding buildings and having little lego men jumping to their deaths? Rocket River
That movie was offensive on many levels including as an overall offense to the cinema and the art of acting.
Obviously I am not black, so I can't see it from your perspective. I just don't see the issue with using makeup to go costumed as the President or Oprah or Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction (for example). To me, it seems that if it is about the costume (as in my examples), instead of the black face (as in Frat boy parties), then there's an acceptable difference. That being said, I know it is your opinion and I am not trying to change it, just trying to understand the line. Do your friends and family have similar feelings?
RR is a bit ridiculous (but he isn't alone). Blackface as part of a costume to look more like someone else shouldn't really be offensive. The whole point of a costume is to look like somebody or something else.
Most things are offensive to somebody. My kids dressing as Mario & Luigi might be offending some Italian Plumber out there.
