So when the league is heading to a faster paced, more creative system with smarter coaches like Stevens we reach back to the slow bogged down offense and antiquated defense of JVG?

Ok. Call me in 3 years when Harden leaves and we rebuild from scratch

I've honestly never seen you be positive about anything regarding the Rockets. Not trying to be a jerk, just saying.

I'd love to have JGV back.

as long as he can change the offensive system to his liking. This layup/3pt only team philosophy is garbage.

Reminds me of all the Cowboys fans who were complaining when Bill Parcells took over again... let alone the fact that he set the foundation (found Romo, hired Wade, made key draft picks) for all of their success under Garrett.

TBH, the Rockets have to get a quality coach any way possible. They are wasting whatever years that Harden will be left here by letting the inmates run the asylum. There are very few new coaches or college coaches in the NBA that have ever commanded the respect that established veteran coaches maintain.

So, unless Coach K is walking through that door... you could do a helluva lot worse than JVG. The Rockets have already proven that in spades.

that is why they are interested in JVG, he has no offensive system, Morey's system stays in this scenario

McGrady used to start backpedaling the moment a shot went up on offense. I'd love to see that commitment from Harden on defense. I don't remember McGrady being a problem. He wasn't the perfect player but I'm not convinced a different coach would have gotten anything more from him.

JVG laid the hammer down on Francis. I don't think he has a problem calling anyone out.

I also think he's aware that different players need to be coached differently. He's not a 1 style fits all guy.

Van Grumpy will bring two things: discipline and defense. No more bs with this street ball style of play.

Makes Me think who here has actually watched Jeff Van Gundy when he coached the team.

He was not a good coach for the Rockets, probably similar to Bickerstaff than anyone else the Rockets have had for their team.

Having Adelman proved how much of an inferior coach he was offensively, sucking up to McGrady rather than pushing him to be a greater player. Rotations were often awful and never played to the strengths of the team. Offense was slowed to a crawl, and players getting injured left to right due to the defensive nature of his system. Maybe he better served coaching a team without a superstar.

But in the end, if they were to hire him it is Rockets choice, and who knows, maybe second time is a charm, but I highly doubt that, more like making the same mistake twice by having superstar talent being unfulfilled when you had a chance to hire a great like Phil Jackson at the time.

Whoever hires Luke Walton will win the prize of the coaches available in the off season, seems similar to Phil Jackson more than anyone available at the moment.

Can we call you now to see who you would prefer?

    JVG isn't a smart coach?
    Antiquated defense?

Charlie Ward is upset he's getting no mention.

In fairness though, Oakley and Ward barely played. Jackson was gone, quick. I thought they did a great job replacing all those guys with Sura, Wesley, James and then later JVG types like Alston, Battier and Hayes. They all seemed like Morey-type moves...low risk vets on low contracts or second-rounders or unpicked players...Bev, Hayes, Smith...etc

With Miller, you could say Adelman wanted his guys, too.

And I took Mark Jackson as JVG wanted a vet to help Francis and Mobley, who really did need a vet around.

Well, at least a new fire JVG thread won't need to be created. Just bump one of the old ones.

No such thing as "sticky" ball under JVG & Thibs. Under Adelman who wanted to move the ball more. T-Mac complained about touching the ball every 5 minutes.

Also T-Mac only did half session practices under JVG. The other half he would just watch the team train.

The JVG/Thibs style of coaching is to put subs & scrubs in the doghouse to make an example. Harden's not going to be held accountable.

Depends on who the assistant coaches are. Get an offensive specialist in here and I'm all for it. You know the dude will have us as a top 5 defense by the end of the first month of next season.

I'd like a coach that has actually coached a basketball team in the last 4 years.

Who's that for a start? Someone who isn't just a name and has shown promise as a coach.

I love JVG but he hasn't coached players in over 5 years. He's never defended teams like the Spurs and Warriors, he's been sitting on ice. I'm I ****ing crazy for wanting someone with the potential to be a great coach? Van Gundy's curling isn't higher because he's been a commenter for 5 years!!!!!

I love van gundy the person and commentator, and while I think he is a solid coach, I can't help but remember how disenchanted I was with him as a coach. He couldn't fix the offense that was broken when the guys on the court would just watch McGrady. He couldn't get a cohesive offensive system with Yao and Tracy together. Adelman turned the team into a much better offensive unit without tanking the defense.

I know he says he would do things differently, but if I were hiring he'd definitely have to convince me of that.
