Uhh outside of the young part he pretty much has that in Denver. The guy is set on going to NY. Only way he doesn't end up in NY next season is if they choose to not sign him which is doubtful.
That's worse case scenario...but the knicks could opt for a sign and trade and we'd get picks and cap room i believe.
Lebron, Bosh and Wade ALL took about $2M less in starting salary in order to allow room for the Heat to sign Mike Miller and to re-sign Udonis Haslem.
The more likely scenario: there is no rental. Carmelo is bluffing- to get to where he wants. He will sign with whoever who trades for him- who can offer him the most money. Calling this bluff is a no brainer for Morey, since even if he is wrong, he can still get assets back in a sign&trade with NY later.
I would be really surprised if ANYTHING happens at all with the Denver trades, but if we have a chance at all to get carmelo even for rent we should give it a shot theres a good chance he'd stay. Beggars cant be pickers
Too big of a risk. Melo will NOT re-sign anywhere but NY for reasons unrelated to basketball. It would the dumbest move in sports history if Morey did this. If I were Les, I'd fire Morey's ass right after he signs that contract to play for the Knicks
we'd get back danilo gallinari, who is the next peja stojakovic of the adelman system. that alone is worth the investment
What is there really to lose in this situation......? Worst case is we lose Melo, but at the same time we would most likely be clearing salary cap space with the loss of Martin and would receive some compensation in a sign and trade. Melo is a superstar in this league. These are talents that you HAVE to possess to win a championship. Go for it.
This trade would accomplish 1 of 2 things... 1) You get a Superstar caliber player in Melo, which is something we all have been hoping for. 1 of 2 things will happen: a) He walks after the season b) He signs and extension to get a max deal which allows us to begin building around Melo and possibly lure other big name FAs; i.e. CP3/Howard 2) IF he walks, then we get plenty of trade exceptions to make additional moves, lottery picks, young talent, etc. for the sign and trade deal - which allows us to begin our "Rebuilding" process. This would allows us to go into a specific direction - either Melo signs and build around him and hope to become a serious Championship contender or you begin to build through the draft and go into rebuilding mode for the next couple of years. Right now we're stuck in the middle...not rebuilding, but also not a contender. Need choose a direction or we may be stuck in the middle for awhile.
The potential payoff of acquiring a guy like Melo outweighs standing pat and sitting on assets like the Rockets have. I'm completely on board with going for it here.
According to HOOPSWORLD the Nets have been involved in talks with Houston bout Martin.I wounder how close a deal to the one offered to Denver they are offering H-TOWN. p.s. Sorry I don't nkow how to have a spesific web page inbedded here(me being a rookie doing threads), but it would be the story bout Prokhorov calling trade for Mello off.
how come we have been the sleeper team so many times in the past 5-7 years? sleeper to win a ring - never happened now sleeper for melo - won't happen
I totally see where you're coming from but I'm almost positive that column came during the offseason when we actually thought Yao would somehow manage to stay healthy for one full season. Hence the NBA championship line. Either way, why wouldn't the Wizard, Morey, trade for Anthony the same way the Nets were attempting to by adding a third or even fourth trade partner into the equation? He would have plenty of assets yo almost instantaneously build a championship contending squad with Yao's discounted expiring among others, extra picks, and young talent to net us a solid playoff squad. Dontcha think? If Morey lands anyone near Melo's caliber he would do anything in his power to show he's serious about making the Houston Rockets contenders NOW and not later.
I'd figure we'd have used up most of our attractive assets in any trade for melo, and also I don't think Les alexander wants any long term contracts, which is what those guys like Rip Hamilton or Troy Murphy are making and their teams are willing to give them up for free.
Choosing a direction doesn't mean going somewhere, esp. if you're talking about rebuilding. The Pacers have been rebuilding since Reggie Miller retired, the Kings have been rebuilding since Artest and Bonzi got traded etc. None of them has had success so far and all of them are continuing to rebuild to this day. Being in the middle is much better than being in the bottom. Guess what happens when go up from the bottom? You end back up in the middle. In this case if Melo walks after the season is done you just gave up tangible assets for free, setting back your rebuilding process a couple of years. Instead of having foundation for your rebuilding already in place, you have to start from scratch because you just helped the Nuggets in THEIR rebuilding process.
