Interesting info about the labor situation http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-wojnarowski_nba_labor_battle_looming_032111
Stern just dug himself deep, at the rate he's pushing things the next body is probably gonna be his...
I agree. I hope a new CBA is contingent on getting that clown out of town (I know this isn't possible, just wishful thinking)
it was a reference to the film "casino", which takes place in vegas, which is where 1/2 the nba's revenue comes from
Stern is apparently delusional. Bragging about what the NBA is worth when more than half the teams are losing money. When last year they had to take out a $200 million loan to make payroll. When the league lost $350 - $400 million each of the last two seasons. And this guy is bragging about the league's financial situation under him? The players should demand the removal of Stern as commissioner as any part of a new labor agreement.
Beats the NHL. And I don't think the MLB has been moving in a healthy direction. There's going to be drastic changes to the CBA, and it's going to be because a third of the league is on life support. But, the revenues are more than good enough - owners just have to have ironclad restraints keeping them from overspending each summer.
That tends to happen when the 2/3 of the league's talent is concentrated on 5-10 teams. Longing much for the days of the Celtics-Lakers rivalry of the 80's David Stern? This is what you get.
If this is true, Stern is a bigger jerk than I thought he was. I've defended him from the lunatic haters here, but this is the kind of stuff that makes me wonder. What a goon.
I suspect Woj's sources are agents and his digs at certain people especially stern is the giving part in "give and take" for his inside info.
Stern didnt handle things well here. But that said, I really am in favor of a revised CBA with a hard cap. Unless someone can prove to me that a good size minority (25-40% depending on who you listen to) of teams are NOT losing money, then I find myself asking this: How many players are not millionaires? How many players are forced to spend more than they make? How long would you expect anyone to keep a job (investment) where more goes out than comes in? Now yes, you can make a substantial point that some teams are poorly managed and over spend. I concede this point. But much of this is due to the competitive nature of the NBA. And sometimes you have to weight overpaying a guy who makes you better against losing him to another team and as a result, your revenues fall even further as your win/loss record plummets and you seats become even emptier. So, if we let the free market take its course, we let maybe 1/3 of the NBA teams just go under? OK, so most of you may say, No we cant let that happen. So we surmise that the total income of the NBA is sufficient to prop up the teams going in the red, and so we make the more profitable teams carry the others. How one does this can have more than one answer. But Stern's general positions, even if I have some trouble with his personage, is on target.
Yeah, that article is 90% spin and 10% substance. A couple random Billy Hunter quotes and a context-free one liner from Stern where Woj took the liberty of finishing his sentence outside of the quotations. The rest reads like propaganda.
i agree. i don't know how he can talk about the league's financial success when the individual teams are losing money
