I think it makes sense. Unfortunately, this sounds like a bad scenario for recruiting below-market-price FA players. And it also makes the CP3 contract stranger and heavier in retrospect.

dantoni's about to retire after next season

he basically just mailed it in this season, even in post-game interviews he admits it.

    new extension
I just found out if mda does not pass 2nd round, he has no bonus.
This year he can’t, why he can do next year?

Thinking more about the stance of ownership...it's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy, no?

"Well, we might have to blow this sucker up sooner than later, so we aren't going to invest in this coach" = future reality where everyone is just waiting for Rockets to blow it up.

That's my main worry. Invest in your coach or fire him now. NBA lives are very short. CP3 is ancient. Give MDA support or cut him loose right now. Sometimes $ losses are the cost of doing good business.

Stephen A Smith is getting a cut from somebody who wants MDA's seat, I wonder who it is?

No way, JVG is too big on treating coaches with respect, always goes to bat for them. Has spoken very positively on MDA.

I would guess it's Mark Jackson who is much closer to SAS.

That's a pretty big difference, though since the '19-'20 option has been picked up already.
'20-'21 (if retained) guarantees a $5MM base + incentives for advancing past the second round.

'20-'21 (if fired after '19-'20) would pay him a severance of $2.5MM which would not be offset by MDA getting another job.

It is basically a guaranteed $7.5MM assuming MDA is fired before the '20-'21 season. Am I reading that correctly?

Morey would be doing the organization a disservice by not clarifying.

I feel like his time came to the end. I was critical of him this year but that still is hof coach Mike DAntoni. He earned his respect and you better treat him like that.

Yes, totally agreed. Both sides are using the media. One or both sides are not being completely transparent. There will be residual effects from how this has been handled and hopefully they are taken care of prior to the start of next training camp.

Really seems like the Rockets want MDA to quit. I don’t like the way it is being handled by the Rockets at all if they do in fact hope he walks. How does everyone come back from this garbage and find success?

Just fire the guy and get on with it.

The only thing the article changed is that he would retain the $2.5m in the event he gets another coaching job, which was never in dispute anyway.

Also, the article intentionally blurs the fact that the playoff bonus applies from the 2nd round onward.

    For clarity:
    - In 2018/2019 he will earn $4.5m.
    - In 2019/2020 he will earn $2.5m base salary. If he ends the season as the coach and we are in the playoffs, he makes another $2.5m. If he makes the WCF, he makes an additional $1m. If he makes the Finals, he makes an additional $1m.

I don't have a problem with whatever they're negotiating. Just extend the man or fire him.

How are you going to get a sought-after assistant or HC (who will have other suitors/options) when your sleazy reputation is in the limelight like this? Monty Williams turned down the Lakers for the Suns. THE SUNS. Ty Lue turned down a 3 year well paid offer. Is he going to join on a performance based 3 year deal? lol

They need to clear this thing up. Also MDA has done his best and even if it's time for a change, they shouldn't be ******** on a coach who worked his way to a .700 record for the franchise plus the best record against Durant's Warriors among NBA teams. Take care of this with some class.

Also, since last season these 4 things happened:

    - Tilman Fertitta claimed that getting under the luxury tax was a happy coincidence.
    - We claimed 4 picks were offered for Butler and this was disputed by the Wolves (through either Woj or Shams).
    - Danuel House's agent claimed the details we publicized about his contract offer were incorrect.
    - MDA's agent does the same.

Who do you think is lying in these negotiations?

Not exactly. In 2019/20: $4.5 million (already on the books)
20/21: If he is fired he gets $2.5 million. If he is NOT fired he would get the full $5 million.

Morey is saying that the only way he wouldn't get $5 million in 20/21 is if they didn't keep his as coach. In that case he gets a $2.5 million buyout with no offsets.
