This screws over the hornets because if the jazz match the hornets prob will miss out on other unrestricted free agents.

    How so?

Chandler received nowhere near the amount that Gordon received.

We knew scoring wings were highly coveted in this market, much more than any PGs (which is why guys like Jameer Nelson are still jobless) but besides LeBron and Melo, the two white guys are the best this market has to offer.

Smart of the Mavs and Hornets to go after them so aggressively, even though they won't get them, at least they put in the effort.

After the stupid money is spent, there will be solid free agents available at value.

It's basically the same contract, just 1 year shorter. In fact, I think I would prefer the Hayward contract because it's longer and straightforward. If Parsons offer has a player option for year 3 (so he can go get even more money if he's successful, or be an albatross for another year if he's not), and a trade-kicker (so that the Rockets can't just match and ship him out later) then it's an even worse contract.

I don't know if Hayward's contract really set the market for Parsons like some are saying. I think Parsons is more valuable to the Mavs than he is to the Rockets, and the Mavs knew he could make an offer sheet that was more onerous to the Rockets than it was to the Mavs. So, I don't blame the Hayward deal, but don't go around thinking this contract isn't so bad. It's terrible.

You're basing the terribleness of the contract on your assumptions (trade kicker, Parsons will somehow decline immensely in 2 years time).

This contract isn't as bad as it could have been IMO. Can you imagine how stupid Cuban would have looked if he signed Parsons to a max offer sheet? We would gladly pass on that.

We all figured Parsons would net somewhere between 10-15 million a year, which is obviously on the higher end yet nowhere near a ridiculous amount of say 18-20 mill per year. Also we honestly don't know the specifics of the Hayward deal, I didn't even get the years from the OP.

We've used similar tactics against other teams (Bulls, Knicks) for Asik and Lin so we can't get mad about another team trying to pull a slick one on us. It's all part of the business. Funny that now we'll probably have already unloaded those two once the free agency frenzy period is just about wrapped up.

How can they offer that much? Isn't that over what he's allowed?

... Cuban DID signed Parsons to a max offer sheet. It's just 3 years instead of 4, hence the lower total amount. Sigh...

The Jazz reportedly had the option to re-sign him at 4 years 52 mill, but wouldn't budge from 48 mill. Nice job there!
