The breakup went badly and the team have playoff success but McGrady was plenty good between 2004 and 2008, likely better than Yao Ming for much of this period and Yao Ming's jersey is retired. Jersey retirement is all about the owner's whim and marketing-- to fans and to potential players they want to recruit. I wonder if the team will determine that this gesture would be in their interest in terms of showing free agents "See, we appreciate our elite players."
Hahahahaha. no. To be honest, I don't think Yao's should be either, but not because I don't like the guy. I'm ok with it, but there just wasn't enough there to warrant it imo. As stated, it's about whim and marketing to an extent, and I don't see either with the case of Tmac.
Yao may not deserve from his games, but he deserve it from the perspective he brought NBA to China. Mcgrady? Not so much.
Hell no... why the hell do we want that loser's jersey retired on our rafters? Let the Knicks retire his jersey or something.
If it gets done, it will not be while Les is the owner. Also, it has to be done at the same time as Yao. I honestly think the current regime has not forgiven TMac: Let Canaan wear TMac's number and Morey never tweeted about the retirement (and instead chose to tweet about Keith Olbermann???) At least the Rockets twitter account acknowledged it, but I think they are probably controlled by marketing
No team will retire his number, book it. Made too many enemies in Toronto, Orlando and Houston. Other teams he was on he was insignificant.
If they do not retire his jersey that is basically sinking to the same immaturity that led to TMac giving up vs Toronto.
