I can think of three reasons. 1. I'm homer 1(a) Strict homer (Houston, Texas etc) 1(b) Broader homer (I'm from Slovenia, I'm 7'7'', I'm very intelligent and wear glasses therefore I like Rockets but hate jazz and their coach etc etc) 2. I like a particular player (Murphy, Dream, Pippen etc) 3. Basketball is a beautiful game and art (i.e I'm a King's fan) For myself, I belong to the second. I have a crush on this 'second best' thing. Dream was the second best to Jordan, and now Yao is second best to Shaq. Hope they both will be the best. (Dream kinda already is, Francis needs work to climb to the second) I hate the first group of people, homers, I'm sick of them. . Two groups of homers are the reason there is war. WWI, WWII etc. Hitler probably was the biggest homer ever. Plus, does being a team/city/state homer as to a player/country/continent homer doesn't make you more 'team spirited', 'unselfish' and 'right' ??? An off-topic note. When people make an arguement, they always manipulate the numbers. So we got Shaq is 7'1, Ben Wallace 6'8'', Kirilenko 6'6'' etc. These are only 1-2 inches off, but we can see the difference OK ?
Um how about I'm a Rocket fan because I lived in Houston for many years and Dream's play converted me from a Knicks fan (yes ugh a Knicks fan) to a Rockets fan
fatman, to answer your question, compare the time you watch Dream's play and the time you lived in Houston, you got the answer. You are a pathetic homer !
Ok, I am not a Houston native. I love Yao & JVG has been my favorite couch, that is why I am Rockets fan and I am very happy to see the team is winning this year. Well the my second & third favorite stars are Koby & Sharq, but I always love to see them loss, is that weird? In terms of the way teams play the game, I enjoy watching Nets (my home team), Kings, Marvs the most.
I know what you are thinking people. You evil ex-communist Slovenians ! You all hope Boki get 30 point. NO WAY. And I can't care less about Rockets to win either. Watching sports is for entertainment, nobody watch garbage sports and garbage teams.
1. Hakeem Olajuwon 2. When I Was Young:9 Years Ago, I Like Phoenix Suns Beacuse of Kevin Johnson, Charles Barkley. I Did Not Doubt That Phoenix Will Win The NBA Champion. But, When 94 And 95 Playoff, Houston defeated Phoenix. 3. Role Players: Mario Elie, Robert Horry, Vernon Maxwell, Sam Cassell When Peril Is At Hand, They Did Well Than Usual
Homers, myself included, are the reason that there are sports who represent different cities. If not for Homers, there would be no Houston Rockets, simply the "Rockets". Same goes for every other team in every other sport. Obviously, some very important people decided it was important that these players represent a city, and not a team/player. No one rooted for the Hakeem Rockets. People who like a team for one player anger me. That's where the majority of Lakers/Cowboys/Yankees fans come from, as far as I'm concerned (and these are three teams that I despise deeply). "Root, root, root for the home team If they don't win, it's a shame." Maybe you should take a page out of the book of baseball.
If only city homers are right, nba probably won't even be an American-wide event since not all cities have a team. NBA will never be an world event, and in general, no such league-like events will be watched and shared by the whole world. That's the real shame.
What exactly are you trying to get at? Where did anyone say that only homer fans are okay? People have urged everyone to be fans of the Rockets, not just one player, but no one has ever said you can only be a Rockets fan if you live in Houston.
Some fans will not support Houston if a particular player leave the team (aka Yao). And some people are not OK with that. They are 'sick of it' and 'People who like a team for one player anger me.' etc. Just to clarify I have nothing against the homers, I was only joking. Homers are the sole reason there are these sports. I was just trying to say xxx-only fans are homers too, just like you. But they can't be a city homer since they don't have a city play in NBA, so they use a different channel, i.e a native player rahter than a native city. If the player leave, they'll leave, just like if rockets leave Houston, you probably won't support it any more, there's nothing wrong with that. watching laker vs kings all day maybe fun, but watch Rockets play is more fun for a Houstonian. For a person who can't be a city homer, they search the same extra fun by other means, and that shouldn't be denied. cheers
I watched the Rockets because they were in Houston and because I was a HUGE Calvin Murphy fan even though he was my second favorite player (Dr. J was the first). As for whether basketball will be a world event, it is already considered the second most popular sport worldwide behind soccer. But, the reason team sports are FAR FAR FAR more popular than individual sports is because fans identify with teams more than players. They pass that love down from generation to generation. That's why there is a 60,000-person waiting list for season tickets in Green Bay. Additionally, players come and go. No matter how great they are, they only play a decade or so. But, the sport continues long after the players you like are gone.
