If you want peace in the middle east - it just will take a very long time. What's amazing to me is that Afghanistan is still around and hasn't fallen. It might soon though.

In any case, you need to put in place a secular strong democracy, give it lots of support, have massive drone program to kill terrorists, and use air support to keep the gov't strong and kill extremists.

The big setback here was Assad creating a civil war in Syria - if it wasn't for Syria I think there would have been no ISIS and people would be a lot less afraid.

We do need to increase pressure on ISIS even further and squash them and their propaganda machine. They need to do more than shut down Twitter accounts, they need to find those jihadists and get them. All.

I don't agree with Andrew Bacevich about Salafi Arabia's oil. I wouldn't mind the US banning oil imports from SA, but we would still need their 7 million barrels of oil per day being sent to our allies and trading partners in Europe and Asia. That is the kind of energy that cannot be easily or readily replaced - no matter how hard people whine about solar energy. That oil is brought to you, our allies, and trading partners by the 3+ million Indian laborers currently in their country.

No it isn't. In the Middle East, perhaps so, but that is cultural, not religious.

Terrorism wasn't even an issue in Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim country, until Al Queda and other Middle Eastern entities brought it there, for example. The same in the United States.

How many Muslims do you know? Was killing deeply embedded in Olajuwon's subconscious?

There are lots of non Muslims who 'aren't ideologically aligned with modern civilization'. Boot them too? How would test for this? One could, for example, could quite easily make a case that you are not 'ideologically aligned with modern civilization' just based on your comments here. So, we should boot you out?

Indeed. We'll see how that goes...maybe they'll let you back in eventually.

Yes, it will. Cultures, just like people, take time to evolve. Also, just like people, they can't skip steps. Infants don't suddenly turn into adults.

Democracy cannot really exist without the supporting infrastructure. If the government has no means to communicate with outside enclaves, and no roads to get there, or infrastructure to maintain...those enclaves have no use for the central government. This is part of what has been missing in the equation in Afghanistan.

You are the defining individual for the concept of 'bigotry of low expectations'.
