Only you trolls would think it is in any way appropriate, much less logical, to lump your Benghazi fetish in with the defeat today.

Here's how it works for you:
Does President Obama get a law passed? "He's a dictator going around Congress to do his bidding!"
Does a proposal with 90% public support get defeated do to procedural intransigence, despite have a majority's share of 100 votes? "Obama's an ineffective tin man!"

How does it feel to be in the 10% of the country that 90% of us view as totally irrational and beyond reproach? How does it feel to lose a 2012 election against a man you ceaselessly campaigned against, from Day One, who openly ran on higher taxes, broader healthcare and larger government? I'd ask how you feel about drowning in the sands of your own ignorance, but you're so deep you probably think that the darkness you stare into is light.

Why were you opposed to this measure? Because it doesn't address "mental health"? Well, you'd be opposed to any federal expansion of mental health screenings because of "socialist medicine," right? Of course, you'd also complain that we can't afford to pay for your mental health screenings, right? Because, of course, the very people who don't have access to the healthcare to detect such problems are the ones you moaned about covering three years ago. In fact, if such a thing were to happen, you'd probably end up on this hypothetical "registry" you keep raving about.

Were you afraid this bipartisan effort was being rammed down your throat? Remember the bipartisanship you lamented no longer exists in Obama's America? Well, here's what you got: a conservative Democrat and a Republican drafting a measure that people on both sides of the aisle could agree on. Unfortunately, because of your ranting and raving and general dumb-assery, you've voted in muppets instead of people. Not only are they incapable of working with anybody and in the interest of 90% of the population, they truly believe they're the bulwark against imprisonment and mass government control.

This language of the bill prohibited a "registry" of gun owners. Explicitly. The only thing you're clinging to harder is the irrational belief that you could ever stand up to the most powerful military on earth if Barack Hitler Obama actually were the devil you think he is.

Odd how this billionaire gets a pass for trying to influence national politics, but others are considered a threat to democracy.

FWIW I think this bill failing works to Obama's advantage politically. He's never better than when he's seen as not governing, fighting against the state of the country rather than being responsible for it.

The "have you no shame", "think of all the slaughtered dead children" schtick is demagoguery of the first order, but it works with low information soccer mom types he needs to turn out in 2014.

His legacy will be that he was really good at getting the country to hate his political opponents.

If they can see Obama as losing, it's time to raise a glass, no matter what it actually means for the country. Public opinion and common sense can be damned.

It's the familiar but still strange football mentality that, IMHO, is a big reason we're in such a complete mess.

Time for Obama and the Democrats to turn this into the left's tea party movement, and beat the right wing at their own game in 2014.

If the Republicans could create political hay over a bill that was opposed by less than half of the country, the Democrats should be able to do some serious damage when the Senate willfully flouts the will of 90% of the electorate.

Go after them all, even the Democrats that voted nay.

    It shouldn't be that hard.

Not only that. People are celebrating that nothing can be passed through congress due to filibuster. It's not about Obama or Bush or any president. It's about the state of politics in Washington. If this does not change today or in the future, WE ARE ALL screwed.

The only way this will change is when politicians are held accountable by the voters. Vote them out, and the next group will learn to behave themselves. The attack ads practically write themselves. Isn't there a video out there of an Al Qaida rep praising no background checks as a boon for terrorism? Put that right next to their faces.

Less about numbers (including the BS 90% number) and more about intensity. Gun rights voters actually vote. They are informed, and will change their votes based on people stealing their rights. Others are more likely to be swayed by other topics.

For example the NRA has no party affiliations and will support either party if they have an A rating and are currently in office. Nick Lampson for example was always massively supported by the NRA.

    My body is ready.

By the way, proud day for John McCain. Pathetic day for Harry Ka-Ching Reid.

B-Bob, if you're basing that on Reid's nay vote, it was for procedural reasons. He supports the bill.

Today's vote didn't mean that much. It does mean that a handful of Senators prefer the gun lobby over 90% of Americans, the families from Newtown and a compromise.

But even if it passed everything it needed to from the Senate it was never going anywhere in the House. No laws were going to change.

They don't have guns, so it wouldn't have worked. I will leave the nonsensical sentimental parading to you guys.

I support good guys with guns protecting our children. Gun control supporters were the ones making fun of the NRA for suggesting it. I think our nation has enough money to protect them. If Obama would have put as much political capitol into that effort instead of a worthless and political gun control law, they would be much safer today. :(

90% of the public 75% of NRA supported and it doesn't get passed.

    American politics is completely useless.
