Why not Josh Harrellson? Could be a value pick up...

Hear me out on this one, I know what it looks and sounds like, but the dude has upside. Consider...

    • Last season in games he played 13 minutes or more (7 total games), he averaged 7.1 ppg and 5.8 rpg playing just 18 minutes per game. That comes out to 14 and 12 per 36 numbers when he actually sees the floor for any significant amount of time.
    • Although given a small sample size (31 total attempts) he hit 39% of his three point attempts (12-31). He is a career 35% 3-pt shooter, outstanding for a center of his size. Speaking of his size...
    • Harrellson is 6'10" and 275 pounds. His nickname in college at Kentucky was Jorts for his affliction for jean shorts. The guy is as hillybilly and tough as they come and not afraid to bang in the post down low.
    • His defensive rebound rate is 17%, which, if playing enough minutes, would put him right at top 30 in the league.
    • He's only 25 years old. He still has a way to go, and playing against Dwght Howard every day in practice would help him improve tremendously. Given that, if we can sign him to a team friendly deal (he will probably go for the minimum) then with a chance to see back up C minutes and still being such a young age, we may be able to flip him later on or keep him long term as a back up C.
    • He shot 71% from the FT line last season. That can't hurt.

Here is his draft express rundown...

Now, I'm not saying he is the answer to all our prayers, but given what you see, he can easily be a value pick up on a beneficial contract who can contribute on the glass and provide that 'stretch' post player asset to open up driving lanes. He's an unrestricted free agent, and with a hard work ethic, he will only get better if given the proper minutes and, most importantly, a chance to work with McHale, Dwight, and The Dream.

If anything, I think its worth a shot to solidify the post position with a 6'10" 275lb, good rebounding, hard working, decent free throw shooting 25 year old center who can be had for next to nothing.

He would instantly become our 4th best 3pt shooter by %.

    And our second best rebounder.

Slow down on the second best 3pt shooter stuff... he's taken 95 3 pointers for his career (3 seasons). By comparison, Harden took 483, Beverly 255 and Jones 101 attempts - last season. 33-95 is a tiny sample size. Same goes for rebounds - 227 for his career, compared to Jones' 528 last season. Harrelson is the same player he was when the Rockets took him in trade 2 years ago... bench fodder.

That's why I said by percentage.

I get that he didn't take many three's, but compared to the minutes he was on the floor, pretty much everyone in the league had an opportunity to take more.

Right now our back up center is... Well nobody. Surely he can be better than Nobody right? Him and Nobody would count about the same against the salary cap.

Current back-up Centers are Motiejunas and Capela in that order, though Capela will likely be enjoying scenic Hidalgo, Texas this season.

At first I thought the title said, why not Woody Harrelson? That would have been much more entertaining. This summer season lull really sucks.
