Anderson, Indiana. They used to call it little Chicago back in the day. The city was booming until the GM plants closed down in the 80’s. Now it’s a clear case of the haves and have nots. Meth eating up the youth. Moved to Houston 38 years ago.
I was born in Kountze, but I grew up in and identify more with the Silsbee basketball program. Everyone in the county were in awe of Kountze's basketball accomplishments. Yeah, those Hancock brothers wee very good.
Memorial Hermann Southwest hospital. Lived in Sharpstown much of my life. You think I'm on a rockets board 'cuz I'm some kind of LOF/YOF/TOF?
I graduated hi School back in the 70s. I think the Silsbee/HJ basketball rivalry developed since then. I thought about saying something about HJ and their basketball accomplishments as well I have become a lot more knowledgable about high school basketball in that area by keeping up with the SETX msg board. Silsbee finally got into the game so to speak when we won state back to back here recently. Kountze and Sour Lake already had multiple state trophies. Hardin county and the greater golden triangle produces a lot of good basketball talent your end and year out.
Yea it really is insane for such a small area. I was at Hj 07-10. State Champs in 07 and Semi finals in 09. Faced Silsbee in every regional finals other than the year they got upset by Jasper. I feel like the rivalry really started in 07 with the Sutherland vs Williams teams. I mainly remember DC because we were the same year and went against each other so many times. I remember being part of that rivalry and how intense it felt. We really thought it was the Duke/UNC of small high school basketball.
I live in N Houston over off N Houston Rosslyn, near Alabonson Rd. I've been living in H Town several decades but I still call Silsbee my hometown. Whenever I drive back there I always go East on 1960 or the beltway, gets on 90 then get on hwy 326 through Sour Lake. When I see HJ I think about the rivalry. Sutherland is a great coach. Travis Williams is very good as well. I saw DC Stallworth in one playoff game, but I did get to see him play. He is an asst coach at LCM now. I am surrounded by Houston basketball but my first interest is 4A ball, 5a too, in the Beaumont area. I usually get to see 3 to 5 games a year, usually Silsbee games. Who knows how many going forward with this virus.
St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Houston's Fifth Ward: There's an interesting history to this hospital which I'm sure many folks have never heard about: https://blog.chron.com/bayoucityhistory/2011/02/a-look-at-st-elizabeths-hospital/
