j@amc, you are definitely onto something IMO.

For the Toronto game, the highest to lowest +/- were, in order (at least 15 min. of play), followed by their average game speed:

    Jones - 4.27
    Brewer - 4.38
    Terry - 4.35
    Smith - 3.75
    Harden/Ariza - 3.59, 4.02
    Beverley - 4.26
    Motiejunas - 4.24

    Distance: Toronto 16.72 > Rockets 16.5
    UFGA: Rockets 33 > Toronto 29

Based on the numbers alone, the bench outhustled the starters, and also built the biggest leads.

It'll be fun to do this metric for every game, or prior games.

Brewer plays with a lot of energy every single game. Keeper!

    Ariza - 3.94
    Terry - 4.35
    Jones - 4.08
    Brewer, Motiejunas - 4.3, 4.38
    Beverley - 4.43
    Harden - 3.68
    Smith - 3.92

    Distance: Mavs 16.63 > Rockets 16.35
    UFGA: Mavs 45 > Rockets 44

The Mavs outhustled the Rockets (total distance), and the bench is outrunning the starters, significantly.

Maybe 'energy' is code word for Harden's (and to some extent Smith's) effort... hmm...

Maybe we should put calorie trackers on each player and see how much they burn on losses and wins?

In reality, I think it really builds on multiple things. Basketball is a game of runs, and psychologically it's a lot easier to run down the court for a fast break opportunity than back for transition defense - on average players just sprint harder to score buckets.

A few calls can do a lot to take the energy out of a team.

    Rockets88,

Glad you see my point. Here are the average speeds of a few Spurs:

    Patty Mills 4.8
    Cory Joseph 4.7
    Tony Parker 4.6
    Danny Green 4.5
    Marco Belinelli 4.4
    Matt Bonner 4.4
    Kyle Anderson 4.4
    Kawhi Leonard 4.3
    Manu Ginobili 4.2
    Jeff Ayres 4.2

Our fastest average is Beverley- at 4.5. If you are running a 3.9 (Smith) or a 3.6 (Harden), you lack "energy."

I don't know why everyone is making it out like its a Rockets and McHale thing. We get these grey, boring lines from every athlete and coach in every sport.

Like in Aussie football they always talk about their "structures" as their go-to thing. Doesn't mean anything just something they can say.

I completely understand it though. The media makes a scandal out of everything so if you say something like "we were better than them" or "we got beaten by a better team" all of a sudden you are on the front page of the sports section with title like "Arrogant team" or "Coach quits on team" or some rubbish.

We play with a lot of energy = We are on steroids.

We play with no energy = We went to strip club last night.

Energy, you know, as in putting the ball in the basket. Yeah, that energy.

Even when he shoots 2 for 10.

Yeah, I'll take talent and skill over energy anyday. Energy is just a plus when you have talent, skill, and the you're running offensive plays to get players open shots.

Well, the Spurs players probably move around a lot more due to the type of offensive sets they run. A lot of times, Harden slowly dribbles around the top of the key to size up his man, so that probably factors into his low overall speed.

I think this stat, though interesting, is not very relevant since it tracks things like jogging, walking, and standing which obviously skews data. Obviously if you play for a team that runs and cuts lot you're gonna be moving faster on average.

It's the same if you're trying to explain why you're unproductive during the trade deadline to your boss. Do you actually tell him it's because you F5ed during half your work days? Or do you make up some cliched bull****?

To be honest I've never used the "not enough energy" card on my boss! LOL!

Vs Minnesota, the highest to lowest +/- were, in order (at least 15 min. of play), followed by their average game speed:

    Harden - 3.75
    Brewer - 4.14
    Motiejunas - 4.27
    Prigioni - 4.57
    Smith - 3.78
    Terry - 4.4
    Jones - 4.19
    Ariza - 4.03

    Distance: Rockets 16.55 > Wolves 16.37
    UFGA: Rockets 44 > Wolves 33

Based on the numbers alone, everyone played with more 'energy'. Harden and Smith are consistently the least 'active' on the court.

"He’s (TJ's) brought us a lot of energy," Harden.

    Last 3 games:
    Distance: Rockets 16.55 > Wolves 16.37
    Distance: Toronto 16.72 > Rockets 16.5
    Distance: Mavs 16.63 > Rockets 16.35

Another good advanced stat for measuring team effort is Uncontested Field Goals. While we can all be puzzled as to why the Rockets - a professional basketball team - miss so many open, good looks, you can flip the stat and track 'effort.'

Minnesota had 33 uncontested looks in the game (and they made 10). This means we were fairly active on defense. Having watched this stat for a while, we have really improved in this area (especially from last year - Wow).

Track back 2 games and you'll see the differences in team 'effort'
The Raptors (on 2-21-15) had 29 uncontested shots
The Mavericks (on 2-20-15) had 45 uncontested shots

I'm with everyone that you can't make too much of any one stat, but together they paint a picture. Speed + Offensive Rebounding (+ those allowed) + Fast Break Points (+ those allowed) + Uncontested shots = effort.

It was good to beat a young, hungry Minnesota team - on to the Clippers; we can't walk our way to victory.

The rockets play with energy most of the times against average and bad teams.

Against really good teams they only play with energy some of the times.

    Curious....

Mchale said more than energy, he talked about how they were running off good shooters to help on bad shooters and other such insanity against Dallas. Giving Kevin Martin an open shot is a lot worse than giving Ricky Rubio an open shot.
